Carpeted Bathroom

Bought a late '70's house and I'm trying not to use all of my retirement nest egg improving it. The bathroom shower and tub surround (to the floor at the front of the tub) is white, sort of subway tile. The previous owner carpeted the entire bathroom floor (and adjoining walking closet) in not so nice berber imitation but tiled the toilet privacy room with the same ceramic tile used in the entryway and kitchen which is terracotta background with a grey/white wash. One suggestion has been to pull up the carpet (which I completely agree with) and put down vinyl flooring in a white tile pattern (which I'm not too sure will work but sounds reasonable). Any suggestions gratefully accepted!
