strip sets

Dear forum friends,I need to make some strip sets- 3 WOF strips joined, then cut into sections. I tried strip sets once before and couldn't get the cut sections accurate. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Try fabric sizing on the fabric before sewing strips and then again before cutting to keep the fabric crisp.

When you press the strip sets, before cutting into sections, make sure to lay the set across (not along) your ironing board. Press across it the short way. That way you are pressing with the more stable lengthwise grain of the fabric and it will not stretch out of shape.

You can also cut your top and bottom strips a bit wider than required and square up the smaller pieces after you cut them, but that takes extra time and fabric.

also try using 'grippers' on your ruler to help keep the fabric firm as you cut. BARBARA

Geri, is fabric sizing something like a light starch? I've heard of it but have never seen it in the stores.(I'm in a small rural area) Is there a brand name? Should I press on the right or wrong side of the strip set? Do I press the strip seams in opposite directions? Thank you.

June Taylor makes a ruler/template called Shape Cut that will cut multiple strips once the fabric is folded correctly. I have used it often for Lover's Knot, Log Cabin, etc. I tried my friends and loved it and it has served me well. Got it with a Jo's coupon. Hope this helps.

What is WOF pls (width of fabric)?

Did you remember to cut off the selvages? If not, that could have added to the difficulty (the fabrics would lie less flat & maybe pucker or buckle a bit).

I; find this an interesting post as I would like to know more about strip piecing a quilt. It would be nice if someone offered a class. I have seen a few example but not a pattern. Jayne

I was pressing the long way-maybe that was causing the problems.I'm going to make another attempt at making strip sets.Hope it turns out better. Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

I try to do everything I can in strip sets. I'm more nervous to try individual pieces. Make certain that you fold your fabric very straight before cutting. Use a rotary cutter, a mat, and a long ruler. The first quilt I ever made I learned from a book I borrowed from the library and it taught strip sets. I love using strip sets because it's so quick and easy!
