seeking kitchen layout advice

hi,

we are just about to start on a big remodel/addition. the kitchen will be part of the new addition. the room is 15' x 15'.

Appliances (brand TBD):

Fridge: 48" built in

Oven: 30" double wall oven

Range: 36" professional range top

standard DW

the island is missing a prep sink. also, the microwave is currently built into the island, facing the fridge.

to provide some context, you will walk into the kitchen from the garage and enter where the double wall oven is.

Walking in kitchen from garage (or from downstairs):

North Wall:

West wall (we have a great view so we would like to keep the sink/window here):

Peninsula (opens to living room):

View of island with back to kitchen sink:

double wall oven/fridge (the open space to the right of the fridge will be a walk in pantry). The opening to the left of the wall oven is the exit to the garage or downstairs.

thanks in advance!

Big sigh of relief when you said you'd have a prep sink...But where will it be? I'd put it right where you plan the microwave.

How wide are all of the aisles?

we were thinking of moving the microwave cabinet over and puttiting the prep sink where the microwave cabinet).

    We have ~38" aisles.

Will your dishes be stored in the island? Where will glasses and cups go? What is the 2-drawer stack next to the sink?

rhome410 - yes, the dishes will be stored in the island. the glasses will go in the upper cabinet to the right of the DW.

for the life of me i cannot remember why i chose the deep drawers there (i blame pregancy brain - i'm two weeks away from my due date :)). i think i was considering putting mixing bowls and other things in there. not sure though.

Have you ever considered doing away with the peninsula that divides the kitchen and the living room and doing a nice long decorative island. My kithchen was designed similarly to yours and when the cabinet maker came to take measurements he recommended I think of doing away with the peninsula and doing a nice big island instead and I am so glad I did. You get a nice big countertop to work on and you can incorporate your wine frig in that. You could also do a larger prep sink or even another kitchen sink and another dishwasher if you have room. It's just a thought, but I don't for one minute regret going with the larger island. Good Luck!!

Where will your dining area be?

Another option on the sink wall would be to put the dw on the left of the sink (possibly nearer dining and more out of the cooking area for when it's open), then sink, then trash (so it's easier to reach trash and dishwasher from the sink, and the trash is still handy to prep and stove area), then mixing bowls nearer the cooking area. Not sure, though, unless you have very tall bowls, that having a 2-drawer stack is necessary...and maybe a sacrifice of one more drawer for nothing. I keep my mixing bowls in a 3-drawer stack with a typical shallowish drawer on the top and 2 deeper underneath.

I understand pregnancy brain! After 8 kids, even though my youngest will be 5 tomorrow (sniff and sigh...), I think I'm still recovering from it! (From pregnancy brain straight to pre-menopause brain...Probably no cure)
