Termites, help please

This is so very gross - I've got a darned termite swarm happening here. Of course its after hours so the bug man can't come. They are coming under the baseboard onto the ceramic floor. The wall they are coming from is the kitchen sink wall but I see nothing there. Any idea's to help me besides sitting up with the vacuum all night. Gag me this is gross. Help!

I'm not an expert, but I'll take a guess. I believe that termites are very closely related to ants. By the way are these termites white, or could they be black carpenter ants?

Just to get a head start, I would go to the nearest hardware store (depending where you live, some home depots are open very late) or large grocery store and purchase a product meant to kill ants and preferably termites. Make sure before you use it that any things you use to for food production like pots/pans, appliances, paper products... are put away and then use as directed.

I took a quick look online and did locate a commercial product that addresses what you might want. Your particular store might not have that product, but it might be the sort of thing you're looking for. HTH - So sorry this happened - keep us posted on your progress

Here is a link that might be useful: product meant for carpenter ants and termites

If they are coming under the baseboard then you have a nest and possibly bad damage. They love moisture so coming from the sink area is no surprise. You need to get a professional to come out and check to see exactly what is going on and correct the problem. Do you have shrubbery or dirt up against the outside wall of your house? That's the type of conditions that they come in on, especially thick shubbery up against the house.

We live in termite country. You either have had or will have or have termites if you are in Alabama.
We have had them and were treated for them. The key is to remove the enviornment that they like. Any component that helps them thrive and you will keep having them til you fix the problem.

It sounds like moisture. Since it is the sink wall. Also you have had them a lot longer than you thinkby the time you see them . They hate activity so they go away as you treat for them, I spent hours researching the pests and the AU Dept has a specialist on termiites. DRY DRY DRY and they go away. Light and np moisture =no termites. Call if you need help. c

I'm no bug expert, but if the termites are swarming in the light (they like dark), I say you have flying ants and NOT termites. At least what you are seeing are ants. I went thru this myself during early spring 3 houses ago.

It still could be termites - I think it is the 'soldier' termites that emerge and swarm when it warms up in the spring, while the rest of the colony stays underneath in the dark. Spray the swarmers with bug killer until you can get somebody out there to treat your house - and the sooner you can get professional termite treatment, the better. The others are right about the moisture. You probably have a constant source of moisture coming from somewhere that'll have to be identified and corrected.

Sounds like "subterranean" termites--as opposed to the drywood variety. Both are a pain. Subs are usually treated by drying out the area around the foundation, interrupting the mud tubes they use to get into your framing, and injecting industrial-strength chemicals. Drywood termites generally require fumigation. I agree, the short term solution is to get some termite killer and inject the area that they're coming from.

can you gather up 2 or 3...that have not had any kind of bug killer sprayed near them. Put them in a jar with holes in the top. Put the jar in a windowsill. Termites will die without hours and shed the wings (sometimes overnight). Ants will live for several days. Have you compared body shape? Body shape is a definite, but was difficult for me at first.

I can't offer advice but I can offer sympathy. Whatever kind of bugs they are - swarms in the house are not fun!

We had a swarm in our previous house. Lily is right...it's the scouts that swarm. They're leaving the colony to start new colonies. They are attracted to light, and they'll die very soon. They'll drop their wings and crawl for a little while, and then die. Then you can vacuum up the mess and worry about treating the main colony. We used the traditional method (injecting termite insecticide into the foundation), but after having another swarm a few years later, we switched to the bait traps that are put in the ground around the perimeter of the house. It was effective, although it took awhile for it to work.
