Custom Table Runner

Does anyone have a table runner that was made by a custom drapery workshop or professional seamstress? I was in a little shop today that sells decor fabrics but their main business is custom draperies, etc. They had a table runner on display that was lightly padded. It felt like it had the very thin type of quilt batting in it. I've never seen one like this. Is this customary for high end custom work?

I love table runners and am always looking for them. You can find the one you described with batting between the material online. Do a websearch for "Table runners". Williams-Sonoma has some great ones, but they're a bit expensive.

And they are very easy to make for a novice. Do you have a friend who sews? If so, she could easily whip one out for you.

I've been searching for a solid pale yellow table runner. If you find one, let me know. lol.

I sew and plan to make one with extra fabric from making shades for my DR. I was just curious to know if putting batting in them was popular. I had never seen that done before. The ones I've purchased have come from Crate and Barrel.

Putting the batting in between helps give the runner body and weight. It may also help a bit with protecting the table from warm plates although I would also use either table pads or some trivet type plates to protect the table from heat.

Here is mine made by a friend.
No quilting but two layers of different materials so it is reversible.
I love it, it matches my roman shades.

Lyban, that's very pretty. You are blessed to have such a good friend.

    artlover,
We do offer table runners with our other custom work. We always have a lining or interlining (or both) inside ours. Since we usually make them reversible, too, the lining helps hide the fabric from showing through. Interlining or flannel just gives an extra plushness. The style and type of fabrics used is taken into consideration. Occasionally the fabric is so bulky we would skip the interlining and possibly the lining.
They are not all simple to make, but can be. There are so many variations with trims, cording, several fabrics may be used, adding tassels on the ends, etc, can all make them quite expensive if it's all custom ordered.
The one lyban has is pretty typical of the ones we make. We have a really neat looking one in the shop right now with little triangles (pennants) on the ends and polished stones sewn onto the ends!
I sew too, but making a simple table runner has not always been easy if the fabrics stretch! I like cotton fabrics--some of polyesters can be a PIA.

Sallymo, thank you for sharing the insider tips. That was very generous of you. I'm looking forward to making some in the near future.
