I have sworn off wallpaper. It really makes the room look smaller. When we finally took down the paper I installed 25 years ago, the rooms looked so much larger and sunnier. If you paint, it is so much easier to make a change.

To answer your question,yes,wallpaper has advanced much. They make a non woven ,easy to apply,easy to remove paper now(so the manufacturer says) which actually does just strip off the walls( with proper prep). Almost all paper is vinyl coated for easy cleaning. As to the texture part,yes you will want the walls as smooth as possible,easy? Hard to say,it is for me but I do it all the time,read some instructions and give it a try. Just remember to follow the most important step when applying the paper and apply a WALL COVERING PRIMER first.
