Please help with pricing!

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of finalizing the design of my kitchen, working with a KD. The cabinets haven’t been ordered yet and originally I priced it with all wood doors, no glass, but recently saw and loved the look of wall cabinets surrounding the window above the sink where not just the front doors had glass, but also the sides facing the sink. My cabinets are Dutch Made, not the most expensive brand, but not the cheapest. I asked the Designer to price the change for the 2 cabinets (each wall cabinet will be about 22 inches wide with 1 front and 1 side glass panel). She told me that the addition of the glass doors left and right of the sink wall cabinets will add 3200 to the total cost. Does this sound reasonable to you? Sounds way too high to me.

Please let me know what you think.

Thank you!

Should be closer to $320 than $3200! Don't know how expensive your cabinets are with out the glass, but it looks to me like your KD is putting the squeeze on you. Even if the added glass doors are custom made, they should be less than a cabinet. Trust me, I've made doors and bought doors and the change you are asking for should be a lot more reasonable than what you have been quoted!
    Just my 2 cents.

Couple choices- call Dutch Made and ask for an upgrade charge range or have another dealer quote those cabinets for comparison.

Also, have you asked about "glass ready"? They provide the door as a frame and you get the glass locally. That should be significantly less and is more than easy for you to take care of on your end. And, yes, $3200 sounds fishy.

Not as wordy as my friend daveinorlando or as knowledgeable but my two cabs with glass were cheaper than without. They provided the wood frames and I got the glass locally for 18.50 each door. Just saying:)

I have those. In my case we already had glass fronts in the plan (which costs no more than doing a wood panel) but by doing glass on the sides they do have to change the way the shelves are held in place, and it is a little more difficult. I swapped raised panel ends for the glass, he told me it was an "even trade".

So, I think they are upcharging you out the wazoo for that much glass.

On the other hand, when I had KD1 deduct the cost of glass from 2 cabinets (fronts only) , I received a $900 credit. This made the cabinetmaker we went with roll his eyes when I told him. KD1 told me that they have to finish the insides of the cabinets that have glass so this pushes up the price. hmmmm, every cabinet I have, whether it is glass or wood front, is finished inside.

Did anyone not think that maybe this number 3200 was a typo? Daveinorlado certainly has enough typos in his posting that it would be a reasonable assumption that the OP would have one, too.

"Add to the fact that every one on here always rants about how affordable dutch made cabinets are from the Amish area of Pa and if you are looking for awesome cabinets at the lowest price in town they are it."

The OP is using Dutch Made cabinets. The company you are thinking of is Dutch Wood. Not the same thing by any means.

After I wiped the coffee off my monitor, where I'd sprayed it when reading this post, I started to laugh.

Why doesn't the KD just say "no can do?" or "What have I got to lose if you say yes?"

That's insane. Unless you're going with some specialty glass, which you can probably buy locally, you should consider having your glass cut locally. Them: Glass. Local.

The adjustment to the shelf supports would never cost $3200. I'm hoping as suggested, $3200 was really $320.

Coming from one who saves and saves to get exactly what she wants (and we're talking years), even I would (find another KD) be forced to smack someone upside d'head.

    I'm still laughing.

Maybe the glass is diamond encrusted.

Recently my daughter was asked to host a work-related conference in Australia, all expenses paid. Although she loves to travel (and loves Australia), it wasn't really something she was yearning to do. A friend told her to pick a fee, no matter how ridiculous, that would make it worth her while to say yes. She picked a fee, and they accepted. She's going to Australia later this year.

Maybe your KD thought, ugh, I just don't want to do this. Except I will for $3200. :p Hope it was a typo.

Don't panic. That has to be a typo or misunderstanding. Call the KD and confirm...then let us know.

DutchMade is a really nice cabinet line. I would say it is in the upper tier, price wise....more than Plain & Fancy or Holiday.

When times were flush, my STBX would do that, too. Name some crazy price if he really didn't want to do some work. Unfortunately -- or fortunately -- he did beautiful work for others and came well recommended...

I am still laughing about $3200.

I am getting 6 glass doors for 4 cabinets, they have pewter caning/mullions and antiqued glass. The cabinet maker ordered the door without the center panel and then ordered the glass from Walz glass cabinet inserts. He is only upcharging me the cost of the glass inserts. They have an online site with a price estimator.

Thank you very much everybody! Reading your replies gave me a good push to call my KD and tell her what I thought about the 3200 tag. I am sorry to report that I did call Dutch Made before I called the KD on advice of dan1888 and asked about the upgrade charge range. The customer service absolutely refused to tell me since I was not a dealer and said that I had to take it with the dealer. Even more upset then I was I called KD and said I was reconsidering going with Dutch Made, if she wants, she can call them and talk it out. Heres part of her follow up email to me:
"I just spoke with DutchMade They had given me pricing for all of the properties that I had to add if we inserted glass panels in door-frames. Some properties were duplicated such as a finished interior, etc. I told them that I would re-write the specifications for the two cabinets and re-send to them for re-pricing tomorrow morning. Ill have the accurate price later and I have been assured that it will not be as high as I quoted you."

I will keep you all posted when I hear back.

Well, [insert dripping sarcasm here] Imagine that.

I'm wondering if you might slap back an email mentioning that it's a good thing, since you've already spoken with Dutch Made. You needn't mention about what.

    Tell me.
Do you trust this KD any longer?
Do you now question everything she's priced out?
Do you think you might just want to get another quote from someone else on something as beautiful just in case?

    Talk about screwing confidence.
