new mom

Hi everyone.. I'm new to the forum.. Everyone seems really nice. I'm a fairly new mom and I'm wanting to stay home with my son instead of having to leave him with my mom 25 hours a week while I work. My husband is willing to let me stay home if I can help supplement our household income from home. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with mending and alterations for business. I was thinking of putting an ad in the paper but I'm not sure where to start. What do you think?

I'm not sure too many people mend things anymore (our throw-away society). Do you have experience in alterations? Some of that work can be kinda tricky and not for inexperienced seamstresses. I don't mean to throw a wet blanket on your idea, but without a background and references, it would be difficult to get started.

Another outlet maybe ebay or consignment in your area. I sell about $200 a month, but that of course wouldn't replace an income. Just a thought.

You could try uniform shops. I have an occasional job applying patches and hemming pants. They also do waist alterations and zipper insertions.

I work for emergency services and have sewing as a hobby. I learned a little from my mom as a child, but am mostly self taught. I learn from mistakes and try to read tips along the way (my seam ripper is my best friend). I have altered my own formals and then moved on to doing some for friends (this is also including a wedding gown and wedding items).

Most people around here use a particular shop for purchasing their uniforms and alterations. I have recently begun doing repairs/alterations for a close friend (also in emergency services). I have also picked up a few others along the way.

Moral of the story...you may check with you local police, fire and EMS departments and see if you can pick up their business. They may not be happy with who they use or they may like a quicker turn around on their items and be willing to switch to you.

I would keep the part time job and let grandma have time with the new grandchild after your maternity leave is up. Your employer might agree to reduce some of your hours or rearrange your schedule so that you can have some time to start a small business. The part time job could also fund the start up costs for the business--husband can have quality time caring for baby while you are sewing or working since he is the one that wants you to go back to work.

"I'm a fairly new mom and I'm wanting to stay home with my son instead of having to leave him with my mom 25 hours a week while I work"

Why not do in-home child care? Check your state and local regulations, but many states have an exception for small providers.

Wow... thanks for all the great advice and ideas... I've decided to explore the wonderful world of ebay... I have some things listed right now so I can get enough feedback to open an ebay store as I have some good ideas for an ebay business. I'm super excited about it! Thanks again!

    Sally,
If you want the directions for the pillowcase dresses let me know. They sell well on ebay.
