suggestions? please

I am gearing down busy life & will do more sewing. Havent done much in years. I made curtains a couple of years ago & spent most of the time trying to get my old machine to work. I want to buy a new machine -not an entry level but not a top of the line. I dont think I would be doing much along the lines of embroidery or anything like that. I have no idea how much to pay or what brand to buy-my budget is around 1,000-1,200. give or take! I wouldn't mind getting something cheaper but you get what you pay for-right? I want the ease of using it without the hassles of constant adjustments & tinkering. Any suggestions are appreciated. There is a baby-locks, bernina & pfaff dealer near by-maybe a janome too.

What machine to get?.....the million dollar question. First I wish you luck and fun in your search for the "perfect" machine. That being said.....First: I have the Janome 6600 and think it is the BEST machine ever! I advise checking it out. Do a search for the Janome 6600 and you will find loads of info on it. There is even a yahoo group devoted to it.
Second: go to www.patternreview.com and check out the reviews of sewing machines there. You will find loads of info on just about every brand of machine out there.
Third: your budget will get you a great machine that will last many years. So take your time and check them all out. Decide what features you can and can not live without. A search of the different brands websites will tell you what features are on what machine. Check out Janome, Babylock, Bernina etc. Also if there are shops near you that sells machine, go in for a demo and test drive. Some lessons in how to use the machine are worth their weight in gold.
Have fun, take your time, and you will not regret it.

I would suggest you go to the local stores and test drive the machines. With that budget you will be able to buy a super machine.
The machine you buy will depend on the type of sewing you do. If you do machine quilting the Janome with the built in walking foot might be the answer to your prayers.
I love the button I push to trim thread. An up down needle feature is great as is a slow to fast sewing speed feature.

For that price you could get a Juki industrial. Sews like a dream. It's meant to go very fast, eight hours a day, with very little maintenance.

Good luck with your Bernina! I had a Bernina machine that my mother bought in 1975 that I sewed on in my home decor sewing business until the poor foot control died, and could not be replaced - so I bought a new 330 last year and could not be happier! I love this machine and the fantastic milage it has given me! I think you will be very happy with your investment and find the machine capable of doing all that you need, or want, to do!
