Yes it should work and yes you should wrap the foam in batting before covering it. You can also put tabs on the pillows(like the curtains) and hang it from a curtain rod above your bed.

Yes, use the batting to soften the look. You can also use and electric knife to cut down sharp corners, just be sure of what you want before cutting. Foam is $$$.
