Hello all. I'm a beginner and have just finished an A-line skirt for my daughter. I'm pretty pleased with it, but I'd like to improve the hem. I drafted my own pattern using instructions from the book Sew What! Skirts, and the information about hemming just said to fold up 1/2", press, then fold up again and sew close to the first fold. When I did this, I found that the material bunched a little bit, I'm guessing because the bottom edge of the skirt is slightly bigger around than the skirt is 1 1/2" up, where I sewed the hem. I'm wondering if I should redraft the pattern, with the bottom inch or so flaring inward, so that it will match when I fold it up -- does this make sense? Or is there some other way to make the hemline neater? It didn't bunch very much but I'd really like to make it better before I sew one in nicer fabric (this first one is just calico). Also, I know the problem will be worse if I make a skirt that is flared more, and my dd really wants a 'twirly skirt' so I really need to figure this out. Any advice? Thanks!
