first post, but lurking for eons!

16 years ago

Hi all -

I've been lurking forever but finally registered to get some posts on the board. We are in the thick of our reno - demo was 2 weekends ago, so I'm "cooking" for a toddler, a middleschooler and my husband out of a corner of the dining room with a toaster oven, micro and keurig - coffee and a toaster strudel, anyone?!

We've been planning this construction since we bought our house 7 years ago. We are combining the old kitchen and old dining room to get a total kitchen space of 12x30 (a prior reno made a new dining room). I'll try to post a layout pic later, when I figure out how.

We are down to the studs, but the floor (crema marble marfil in a French pattern) went down yesterday and I expect remaining wiring and plumbing to be done today.

Design choices so far -

cabinets - custom, mahogany;

48" Capital range w 6 burners and griddle;

Best 1200 cfm hood insert in custom "hutch style" hood;

Kitchenaid Artisan II fridge and built-in micro;

Miele Optima II Panel ready DW;

Lapidus granite on majority of counter and backsplash; Black Galaxy on drop-level baking station and corresponding backsplash;

Range backsplash, Dune Emphasis Glass Mosaic in Trencadis Diabolo;

Lighting, Quoizel Pomez Agate pendants over peninsula and chandelier over kitchen table, plus various undermount and can lighting throughout.

That is the big stuff. I'll have some questions to post later, but if anyone has any comments on items so far, I would love to hear them!

    Congrats on your first post! I also have been lurking for a long time with an occasional post here and there.

    I read your post and had to comment because we're going through the same thing. Demo started last week. My kitchen, FR and sunroom have been gutted down to the studs. My DR is a mess with a toaster, microwave and Kuerig. I have a rice cooker and crock pot that I thought I would use for meals, but I can't deal with the mess and have only done take out so far. I just bought 2 boxes of Toaster Struedel, frozen quesadillas, microwave hotdogs and boxed cereal. Doing dished in the powder room is a pain.

    Your choices sound really nice. Pics would be great. I keep telling myself I need to post pics of my choices to get feedback, but things are so hectic I don't have the time to learn how to do it. Good luck with your reno. Keep us posted.

    I would love to see pictures, too, but would "settle" for your layout plan! :) Not alot of width to work with, which is my challenge too so I'm excited to see the solutions you have come up with. Best of luck!

    I will try to do pictures of the layout later tonight or in a day or so. Long story short, we are dealing with the width problem by cabinets down both long sides of the room, with a peninsula forming the "wall" between the end of the kitchen and the family room, which one end of the kitchen opens into (ignore the grammar on that one). Also, rather than a kitchen table somewhere out in space, a banquet is part of our longest run of cabinets, so the kitchen table is tucked in there, along the side. My hope(!) is that the layout leaves plenty of room to look spacious in the middle of the kitchen, but not so that it looks like a bowling alley!

    Motherof3, our lives sound really similar right now! I had all these plans for simple meals using the few small appliances left, but that has all gone out the window and the pizza place guys are like "what, you AGAIN?!" I bought some of those Bertolli skillet meals for this week, so we'll see how those go. My son's highchair is in the family room because I'm terrified he'll drip something on my dining room rug, so he now thinks the Wonderpets are a normal part of dinner. I'm trying to keep my eyes on the prize, but I'm sinking fast!

    My husband says three more weeks at the outside (including granite template and install). What's your timeframe?

    Welcome to unlurkerdom! It sounds like it's going to be a lovely and interesting kitchen.

    We were told 6 weeks to a functional kitchen where we will have a sink and be able to cook. So far we have demo'd the kitchen and taken 1 wall down. We have 1 more wall to go. I was told to have the new appliances delivered next week so I'm hoping we're close to cabinet installation.

    I am interested to see your layout. I can visualize the galley style kitchen with a peninsula at the end, but I don't know where the banquet is.

    We plan to have a large center island. I need to decide if the end of the island will have room for 1 or 3 stools. If I do 3, the island will stick out further into the FR than the other cabinets. I'm not sure if that would look weird or not.

    Tonight we had takeout sushi. How about you?
