Need help picking paint colors

Our home is currently the light flat color the builder painted all rooms. We have kids and a dog, so our house is looking pretty beat up now! We have a living room/dining room/foyer, kitchen, family room and hallways we would like to paint.

The kitchen has natural oak cabinets with Butterum Granite Formica counter top. Curtains are brown/gold stripe. I would like a darker/deep color for the kitchen, to help hide wear.

The living room/dining room has our china cabinet in Wheat from Ethan Allen. It is the only furniture we selected for the room, the rest of the furniture is dark cherry furniture that was passed down. The floor is a medium dark wood. There is a brown leather couch, gold tone chairs and brown curtains. The dining room chairs I have reupholstered in a fabric I like, and I will make matching pillows for the living room. The fabric is dark brown with green and terracotta flowers.

For the family room and halls, I just want a neutral that will look good with the other two colors and it not too light or too dark or to fleshy. The living room has cherry and black furniture.

I think I need "new eyes" on this. I have 6 different paint samples on the walls now, lol, still don't know if I am on the right track. I can use Ben Moore paint or Valspar paints. I would really appreciate thoughts on the three paint colors!

I first posted this under the "paint" forum, but I am moving it to Home Decorating. I can post pictures later, but my house looks a mess, as I have been trying to pick paint out for a good while now (it's taking up my cleaning time!)

Thanks bunches!

Teresa

Theresa, I suspect you'll get a better response if you post pictures. We have a BM paint in our living room and dining room (separated by a central fireplace)that I think is called Buttered Toffee. I will try to find the leftover later. It is a nice neutral, although I do see a little bit of orange with midday light. Love it in the evening. The kitchen/family room is off that and is Saybrook Sage. We use Lily of the Valley (#905) for the crown, baseboard, kitchen cabinets, doors, and all trim.

Hope you get some more feedback.

    This is the Foyer

    That leads into living room

Living room opens into dining room

Dining room, with sample colors on wall. Also notice two different china cabinet colors.

Dining room chairs, a nice dark brown with green flowers

    BM Rattan

Glidden calming green tea (got free samples by mail)

Dining room goes to kitchen and breakfast room

    My kitchen

Kitchen roman shades that I can hang as soon as I paint!

Tried BM Aura Firenze, but looked funny with the butterum counter

    Trying the bm davenport brown.

    and rattan

Kitchen leads to breakfast room, mud area and hallway

also leads to den/family room with this fireplace

and family room leads to hallway

I am thinking a deep color for kitchen to hide ware, a neutral for den and hallways, and a color for the foyer/living-room/dining-rooms.

Sometimes the Rattan looks like a good neutral, then sometimes it has a puke green color to it. :(

That could be because of black in the formula -- that whole color shifting due to light source business.

If you think you like Rattan and you feel it would be worth the effort, take a look at the formula and see if there is indeed a shot or two of black. If there is, you could check with the tinter (color mixer person) at the paint store and ask if he/she would mix Rattan without black.

You can mix any color without black. Not like I've have EVERY color in the universe mixed without black so I don't mean that to sound sooooo finite, but odds are your color can be made without the black.

No black will alter how the color reflects light and how it shifts as the light changes. It's worth the effort and experiment only if you're sure that's 'the one' except for the puke green part.

Today I picked up SW paint chips of Latte, whole wheat and bagel. Do you think the warm neutrals would look good in the family room and hallways?

I am thinking BM sherwood tan is close to the SW Latte that I like, thinking about sherwood tan in family room and sierra hills in hallways, what do you thing about that? anybody?

I think you are on the right track with the green - especially in the dining room with the floors and furniture. I would tone it down to a more neutral green like Ben Moore Coastal Fog or some kind of Sage. Ben Moore Crown Point Sand maybe for kitchen - it changes color with different lighting during the day and your countertops have lots of nice colors in them!!! Take a close-up of the kitchen to a Ben Moore dealer and the designer should be able to help you. GOOGLE the colors - for instance GOOGLE: "BENJAMIN MOORE RATAN ROOM PHOTOS" and you will be surprised how many pic's you can look at on line!!!!!

These are the chips of SW latte, whole wheat and bagel. Above them is Gliden vintage yellow and above that is Olympic toffee crunch. We are not using the yellow now (because of the oak.)

This is BM Baby Turtle in my dining room, it is on the left around the soothing green tea.

This is the baby turtle in the kitchen. I liked it on the left, but under the cabinet I do not.

Cyn, the Buttered Toffee looks like a nice light neutral, like the upper ones in the three chip strips (latte, whole wheat and bagel.) I am thinking about a color like that for my hallways and possible family room. I like the green, (I will check it out for my bedroom!), but I'm not sure about it with the green I have in the fabric.
FunC, I like the rattan as a deep neutral, but not enough, so I think I will keep looking at greener colors.
Tracee, Thanks, I am turning my thoughts back to a green for those rooms, and that crown point sand looks like a good neutral too. At first I was using the Ben Moore Personal Color Viewer, then I posted on the ben moore forum, and that is how I got the Firenze, rattan and safari. I got the chips for those, and some testers, but I just didn't think they looked right. I started Googleing the colors, that is how I found GardenWeb! Every time I googled a color, it sent me here, that is why I posted, because I was so impressed with the posts I had seen!

Is the way I did this fine? Should I break down and have a different question for each of the major rooms?

Thanks to all who are helping! Sorry I need so much help, but all this has gotten me thrown for a loop, and now my house looks worse with all this wrong paint on the walls!

Ohh, what do you think of the baby turtle?
    Thanks again!

I like the tone of the davenport the best with your counter and cabs. seemed like the others did not make the counters look right. I would suggest you keep the walls in the chocolate color I definitely think if you go medium or light it will not be the contrast you are looking for. Seems like the davenport is bringing out that dark color in you counter nicely,as I can tell from the photo...looks rich. Plus I just love your fabric and think it will blend beautifully with the brown fabric of your roman shades. Love the same color on same color look. good luck

Thinking about Timothy Straw for the living room/dining room. What do you think?

Today I went to a Ben Moore store across town, and they have a wall painted Timothy Straw! I think this is the green, I so wish I had taken a picture.

I had Lowes to color match BM Timothy Straw in the little sample size, and have a first coat over the baby turtle, turning leaf and soothing green tea. I will try to post a pic when I get the second coat on.

This is the Timothy Straw in the dining room. So, what do you think?

I also think I will start a separate thread for my den/family room, so maybe it wont be so confusing.

It looks pretty to me. I also really like the Rattan. Maybe you can use it in one of the other rooms. I saved a picture of BM Shelburne Buff and interestingly it reminds me of your house, so I thought I'd throw it in so you could see what it looks like.

Thanks Laurie! I also like the Rattan. In my room it looked like a really nice Khaki brown, but everything else in the room is brown, the furniture, the leather sofa, the wood floor, so I just kept pushing for a green for those rooms. I really like the neutrals, and Sheree Williams paint chips are much bigger than BM! I picked up SW Latte, bagel and whole wheat. I am not sure if I have the above buff, but I will check. I am putting those chips samples by my fireplace, trying to decide for my family room and hallways.

I decided to go with a more neutral green color for the foyer/living room/dining room, I am trying BM Grasshopper. The kitchen I am looking at BM Mountain Lane, and for the rest of the house, hallways and family room, we are looking at BM Cotswald.
What do you think? I am testing samples, but don't have any pictures yet.
