Before investing any money in fabric, I would scrub the chair down...you may not get all the stains out but it will sanitize and freshen the chair. If you have a rug/floor steam cleaner or floor scrubber, use the wand attachment on it or the carpet brushes for the floor scrubber, or use a soft scrub brush and carpet cleaner. It's amazing what a good scrubbing will do for uphostery.

I would also do the price game as to whether the cost of fabric and notions would be less than getting a new chair and covering it with a throw cover...those chairs have dropped down in price.

I haven't sewn my slipcovers yet, but I recently watched Pam Damour's excellent CD on the subject. If you pin wrong side out and the sides are not identical the slipcover might not fit. So you pin the fabric right side out and then reach underneath and repin. It looks tricky, but that's how the pros do it.

You have the right idea, but pin the fabric right side up. Make sure you have pre-shrunk the fabric.

I noticed while visiting my daughter in England a few years ago, that they had the idea of using peel n stick velcro on the chair to keep the cover from slipping around. It works great. Just put the velcro in the bottom sides and bottom back of the chair. When I made one recently, I also put the velcro across the bottom front and back so it wouldn't shift. Love that velcro.

Since this is a child's chair, that your child has obviously loved into it's present condition, don't worry too much about whether one side one side is different from the other. Pin fit the fabric inside out as you originally planned. If it's in the child's room, sheets or a twin quilted bedspread might be a nice coordinated choice for a cover. Good luck, it will be a great practise piece.

RE: Trying to remove stains from a child's stuffed chair, I ruined it trying to do that. It has such horrible large stains from the carpet shampoo that it is worse looking than
just food, drink and poo stains. Don't try it.
