quilting question

Hello. I've never quilted before and did not have any interest until today. Something came over me and I've cut out a ton of rectangles in four sizes that are doubled each time. (Like, 1"x2", 2"x4", 4"x8").

Am I wasting my time or can I do something with these? Should I consult a book or??

I've really only made garments, not counting drapes, duvets and purses!! Is there any trick to quilting or can I just create a pattern using my shapes, sew, batt and back? Oh, I guess I'd have to quilt the top to the back so the batting doesn't float around...duh!

Boy, something did come over you!!! A quilter may be born!! There are a lot of "tricks" to quilting and if you have never quilted I would suggest doing some research before starting to sew. You have a great idea to just sew some pieces together but if not done in some kind of order, you might end up wasting the fabric. Just do a google on quilting. You can look at about.com and find a lot if info on quilting. Kathy is right, check out the quilting forum, those ladies know everything.
I am a relatively new quilter myself and like you I just decided one day....hey I want to do that.

Thanks, Murphy! I have often described myself as a sewer but not interested in quilting. Whoops!!

I put one post up and got tons of info, suggestions, and links. Someone was even kind enough to suggest an order for sewing my pieces together--yay!

I haven't sewn them yet, I'm just farting around with putting pieces together that I like. Once I do that, I'm going to sew one block in the order suggested and see what happens next.

I'm really looking forward to this!
