Comments (40)Heck yeah, it's late in Florida! Just found this thread! Haven't read entirity but there are gorgeous retro appliances made in Canada. Elmirastoveworks.com/northstar Beautiful flamingo pink, red, green, orange, buttercup yellow..even with a kegerator! I say I'll want just one of them in yellow as my "fun"piece and do others in white. Your same funky corner cabinet was in a new rebuild summer cabin in Maine. Its still featured on HOUZZ. Everybody loved those cabinets. Another Houzz featured kitchen Cheery Retro kitchen 1913 shows touches of updating through the 50's. Yes, they had red countertops made by Pionite. The aluminum was applied by flooring Co. Sponsored ads on Retrorenovations.com has sites for your countertops, edging, formica and even patterned formica. Great fabulous wonderful photos and stories. Terrific inspiration. Just don't change ANYTHING until you have lived with it a while. That's the best adbice I've heard and gladly pass along. Congratulations!!!!...See MoreBring this 80s Contemporary "Lodge" in to the Present
Comments (20)I would open up the stairway and consider TV storage underneath, drywall or paint the walls, add the oak plank floor you have elsewhere in the home plus add a large area rug with the orange, blue & green colours. The cleaner lined furniture you have really compliments this space, such as the orange couch, orange chair, clock, round coffee table and the fireplace mantel. Try the mantel without the four small frames. Consider removing the 'country' style items, small artwork and the small framed family photos. Simple drapes on the lower windows, the upper windows are a challenge. Make some calls to window experts to see what new options are available. Less is more, let your fireplace and the view be the stars for this room....See MorePlenty of space, not much va va voom
Comments (91)Lots of great ideas here, however, living in a home with lots of reno's myself, I have a few suggestions. First, Don't paint the wood or cabinets until you have the rest of the bathroom to your liking, it might not be necessary! A pale robins egg blue/sea glass green-blue/aqua color would be beautiful with that pale wood. A large, round, oriental type rug in the center of the large space would be gorgeous - warm up the space and tone down the noise. Use the pale blues, greens, deeper blues and greens (so the room isn't all washed out) and perhaps the rust colors suggested by Jillians post from Feb 1st, and some black. A med/large ottoman centered on the rug would help to fill he space luxuriously - a place to sit or lay out clothing or robes/towels. If you could do a round ottoman, that would help to soften all the sharp lines and angles even more, but if not, square would be fine. An extra plush touch would be a chandelier, anything from shells to crystal or colored glass, over the ottoman. A larger piece of art would be nice, bringing in pale watery blues, soft greens and the sandy color of the woodwork, not so much the dark muddy brown. The tall skinny mirror (next to the shower) could be mounted to the front of the skinny linen closet door, freeing up space for towel hooks on the wall next to the shower. At the same time it would hide one of the (multiple) doors and wood. Definitely match all of the metals in the room. You could even go to glass knobs on the cabinets, or something soft and swirly in a metal. Moving the towel hand towel holders to the same height would be helpful, put them at the average height of where hands will grab the towels. Towels could pull in a bit of deeper colors and perhaps black in a pattern, the pattern does NOT need to match either rug! As long as the same colors, and different sizes/types of prints, are used you can mix and match patterns pretty freely. ie: Paisleys/stripes/flowers, all will work together if they incorporate all of, or some of the same colors (but don't introduce new ones), and if say the paisleys are medium, the strips are skinny and the flowers are larger. Hope that makes sense! Please, do not get stuck in creating a "beach themed room" because of the colors, that gets really tacky really quickly. If you love the idea of the beach, just create the colors and textures that make you feel like you're at the seashore. Enjoy, and try to hold off painting that wood. I don't prefer either painted or unpainted wood, but if it's a good wood (not cheap-skimpy-contractor-make-do-grade), and will work unpainted, best to keep it that way. All this being said, if the colors clash with the room on the other side, this comment is for naught. The rooms need to align with each other, not matchy-match, but go together. You could always try another color palette, just test, test, test. Oh, and yes, a couple of quite large plants, ferns of some type, would be gorgeous by the tub. Don't put lots of bits and baubles around the tub, in that large room a couple of large items, like the ferns/plants or such, are best....See MorePOLL: Hardwood in a kitchen - Yes or No?
Comments (393)Chess, "I don't want my memories etched into my floors, LOL!!" I hear ya! We are going with wood floors as it's an open plan and tile wouldn't look good at all as a transition. But then... memories are a good thing too, even when etched into flooring. I feel strongly that tile is far more resistant and durable, however, sometimes it's an aesthetic call. My parents had wood flooring, and yes, they had to keep it wiped up after spills. At one point I took over care of their home, and the refrigerator's ice maker copper tubing decided to leak... all over the wood kitchen floor. It was left overnight (about 12+ hours) and created a huge pool on the flooring. I was deeply upset, but soaked it up, dried it well, and all evidence of the pool of water was gone. houston2012, I'm going to also strongly agree with you... I have always tried to keep my home pristine (an impossibility). I've a lovely coffee table, and after years of keeping it utterly pristine, my dog dropped a toy on the table, scratching it while retrieving it. I was devastated for 5 minutes. Every time I look at it now, I am reminded of her playfulness and how much joy she gave us. All homes have 'living patina' as I prefer to call it : ) There are other things in life to be upset about. A scratch or mark here or there isn't going to kill me, though I'll do what I can to prevent them : )...See Moremyyellowstang
