New Home Rotary info & part source needed

I saw on another thread that DamascusAnnie collects National serial numbers, but I'm not sure if you want #s as late as the "New Home". I picked up this up at a local thrift store, refinished the cabinet and replaced the pulley and got it working; then found another at the same store a year later that I went ahead and bought to use for spare parts.

This one is #NHR 624109

The "spare" looks identical (slightly different cabinet) is #NHR737740 and had all of the attachments, which I have no idea how to use, but am determined to figure out.

I was wondering if anyone has any information on these. I have checked ISMACS, but can only figure out it's probably at least sometime before 1954.

Also, does anyone have a good source for a power cord for a New Home portable Model 8F

As you can see it's held together with electrical tape which makes it too fat to fit.

OK, you have two entirely different New Home machines. The top machine is a machine that was made after New Home and Free merged in 1927 and is actually a Free machine made from the 1930s into the 1950s and shows a lot of similarities to the Singer 15. The company continued to use both the Free and New Home names after the merger, which causes a heck of a lot of confusion at times!

The bottom machine is a National Model, the Expert BT Vibrator, which was made after National and Free/NewHome merged in 1954. I would like the serial number from that machine.

Ok, it took a while to find the serial # on the National (bottom machine). It's 85037298.

Thank you Annie for the info on the other New Home/Free machine. The link below is to my photo album with other pics of these two rotaries with all of the attachments along with a Singer I just picked up from 1942, but I haven't started the repair on it yet. So far it only seems to need a new belt and a cleaning. Can't wait to play with that one.

I've found a website for A1 Sewing Machine Parts that says they have power cords, and I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience dealing with them or has another source for a replacement power cord for the National.

The second machine (the National) is actually a long bobbin machine as is your new Singer. Do you belong to any of the sewing machine forums? I belong to several. Most practical for learning to use your machines and find parts would be Wefixit, Vintage Singers, and Antique Treadles (yahoo groups) and Treadle On (www.treadleon.net). www.ismacs.net is also excellent and actually might be best for you.

No, I haven't joined any forums yet. I just love the look of these older machines and think it's a lot of fun to get them working again and make them look as good as I can. It took forever to get the tension set right on the New Home and it was hard to get used to the knee pedal, but I did manage to make a basic curtain for the kitchen window - yay me :-)

I've used sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com for a replacement pully, needles and bobbins on the upper rotary; and bought a manual from sewing-machine-manuals.com. I had great service from both places. I will definitely check the places you gave to find a power cord - thank you.

I'm a basic sewer, can follow a pattern if it's not too complicated and have mixed patterns to get a look I want (bodice from one, sleeves from another, etc). I have made Halloween costumes for my kids and niece, do some mending and know enough to teach my daughter the basics.
