Clare, I have a Brother machine (about 5 yrs old) and it came with what they call a side cutter foot that simulates the serger action. I say simulates because it trimmed the fabric then zigzagged over the edge. A serger uses 4 threads to form the seams and overcast the edge. It took me forever to figure out how to get it to work. I sewed one skirt with it and after several washings the fabric unraveled past the seams. Since the overcasting stitch is supposed to prevent raveling, I wasn't very happy! Not long after that I acquired my MIL's old serger and then bought one of my own, so I haven't even tried to use that foot again.

My previous machine was a Kenmore that is probably about 20 years old now, and I'd never heard of a foot that could simulate a serger before I got my current machine.

Donna - Thanks for the information. I just hate to buy a machine that I would hardly use, but there are times I wish I had a serger.

Hi; Clare, my best advise to you would be buy a serger. You will be amazed how much you will use it. Check out the used ones at your local sewing store. When you zigzagg your seams you use a lot of thread. When you use a serger you use serger thread which is less expensive and covers much better.

Clare, I got my serger at Hancock's for $199. You may also be able to pick one up used from a sewing machine dealer or on Craigslist or EBay. I hardly ever use mine, but it doesn't take up too much of the corner of my sewing table and it's sure great to have it when I need it!

Bonnie, Donna - Thanks for the input. The expense of a serger would not go over well with DH. I saw the serger foot on ebay for $25. I might try it for heck of it. I have looked at used sergers in the past and can't tell if they are good ones or not. I know nothing about sergers. I am in a very rural area and we have lost our fabric store that sold machines. So no one to help me or get lessons from.
