The parts aren't expensive - sewing machines seldom break, and it takes years to wear them out if they are maintained.

The kind of machine you should get depends on how much sewing you intend to do, what you intend to sew, and what features you want on the machine.

Sewing machines seldom need new parts, if they are taken care of. If you do need new parts. Some can be expensive and some not.

I love Janomes. I have had a few since the sixties. One lasted over 30 years. A heavy duty if you want to sew jeans or heavy stuff and get as many decorative stitches you can for the money. Go for something that looks like it makes sense to you. If you like it most of the major brands will be good.

The Singers I've had seemed to need the most repairs. Had a Sears Kenmore for nearly 25 years and the zig-zag feature finally quite, straight stitching works fine. Now I have a Brother (cheaper) and it is serving me well. Has about 15 different stitches which I like as I'm sewing for Great-Grand Kids now. The trouble in my area of US is that it is difficult to find a repairman for any machine.
