Singer T&S 636 hook & needle timing

I recently was given a Singer ZigZag, model 636. I noticed the hook wasn't spinning while it ran so I opened her up and low and behold the top upper gear was gone.
Does anyone know how to properly time the needle and hook so they don't slam in to each other? I don't want to just eyeball the alignment if there is some specific procedure that will assure the gears align correctly upon installation.
