Mirror in DR ?

I've been thinking about what to do with my DR wall. I was going to buy the print Tuscan Farmhouse from art.com but since I'm so fickle it might not be the best idea. A couple years from now the thought of changing out a couple hundred dollar picture just doesn't sound smart to me. A mirror would work better if I decide to change out decor plus it would make the room appear larger.

I posted this a long time ago as a contender for the foyer. Over a year later this mirror is still at the thrift store. I forget the dimensions off hand. They're asking $65. I assuming that's a decent price. It's beveled and looks old to me. I could have the someone call the owner and see if they'd accept less.

I'm not in love with the color but that could be darkened.

I also have these wrought iron sconces I was thinking of hanging on each side with candles.

Thoughts?

Love the mirror, shee. Would you paint the sconces black like you painted your grill? They seem a bit delicate, but maybe your dad could build a rounded frame that could also be painted black so they'd have a little more weight. What do you think? If you're going to place candles, don't light them. Maybe you can luck upon a glass cover that would fit over the candles. Your home is really coming together!

I would do the mirror alone...very pretty!

Abundantblessings - Thank you! I think the sconces are black now. There's a little rust on them though. Now that you said delicate I see it. I can't picture a frame ? I wouldn't have to use them there. I found them at a garage sale for like $1.00. I did buy two beefier ones but only bought one of each. At that price I'm not sure why I just didn't get all of them and then decide later. I wouldn't light the candles if I used them. It's rare I light any candles actually.

Loribee - I'll have to check the dimensions again. I was worried about it looking squatty. I'll have to do the mock cut out.

I definitely think that would look great on your wall; I'm assuming you'll verify the dimensions with a template. I would not hang the sconces with it,
the mirror alone is enough , imo.....

The mirror would be grand, but those sconces are too delicate looking to pair with the mirror. The mirror is just what I've been looking for, darn, wish that thrift shop was close to me.......that's a good price for it!

Would love to see it in your DR.

Well it seems like we're both on a mirror kick. :)

It's a nice piece and if you aren't in love with the frame, the texture of it would lend itself, nicely, to an application of Rub-n-Buff or a similar product.

I have a slight problem that I didn't think about until now. I just had DH hold a small mirror I had up to check out the reflection... When you walk into the DR, which is straight up from the foyer you can see my neighbors house/roof/etc in the mirror. I'm not a snotty person by any means so please don't flame me but it's not what I had in mind to reflect. He's a very nice man and isn't home much but our fence only blocks so much of our view out back. The rest of the area around us is pretty!

SOooo... I wanted to get some type of treatments for the patio doors anyhow but was stumped. I only wanted to have them down at night.

I don't think anyone else would come here and judge or really even notice but it'll bug me to see that as a reflection.

I was going to head over and get some dimensions and now I'm not sure what to do. I'd rather have a mirror than a picture. Still think it would be more practical in the long run.

hehe I just realized the cutie in the one pic is DH! Shh..

I decided to do some blind mock ups. I would have to keep them down at least that far to block most of it out.

I was thinking some type of bamboo romans or something. I did want to have valances also but that's probably a whole different thread.

We're going to head over to look at it. I do need to make sure it's going to work before I get it because they don't take returns.

Love the mirror, but not for your dining area. I think the mirror would better in a more formal room.

And the reflected area when sitting at the table would be of the kitchen...not a good view, IMHO.

I think artwork would be better on that wall.

shee, rather than WT, would you consider planting a tree there to block the view? A crepe myrtle would have wonderful summer color and nice bark and structure in the winter.

I'll have to check out that tree. I don't think we really want anything planted in the back yard at this point. Our front yard is pretty big but that back is smaller. Eventually we'd like to have a patio/deck and maybe a pool yadda ya so we're just waiting to really do anything. It's long but not super wide.

The dimensions are 4" wide x 2'1" long. The frame is 4" thick. The mirror itself is 39.25" wide x 16 1/4". DH keep saying it will stick out from the wall. I have to dig around for something large enough to do a mock up.

Here's the picture I was originally considering. Don't really know what frame or if I should do a mat or what color mat. The example below is in vanilla. Just the print is 34x28.

You are smart to consider what will be reflected in the mirror. Don't forget that it will also reflect people while they are eating at the table.

    Sheesharee,

That's a really pretty print that you showed us, and if the mirror reflects what you'd rather not see, then I think that print would look lovely there instead of the mirror. (You can always send the mirror to me......lol!) The print has many of the same colors as those in your room, the greens, golds, dark brownish reds and vanilla shades are seen in your wall color and fabrics. I think it would be a perfect choice, and the vanilla colored matte sets it off attractively.

Since it is a print, you do need a matte surrounding it, along with the frame. The only type of painting that isn't matted and put under glass would be an original oil or original acrylic painting.

All others....such as etchings, prints of oils, acrylics or watercolors, are always matted and under glass. :-)

I should probably go with a print because of what's reflecting. DH isn't really for the mirror. Glad I didn't impulse buy tonight! I was having a hard time.

Here's a picture of it with the white matting. I'm hoping if I ordered the vanilla it's not a funky color. The white seems pretty stark to me. I can't believe how much it costs to have a picture framed. The print itself isn't expensive. I still think it's cheaper on art.com than it would be to go to Michaels.

I think the mirror would be wonderful, and rather than Rub 'n Buff, I'd consider a coat of paint...a great classic dove gray, or a deep ivory...then you get the feeling and texture of the detailed frame without the formality. A painted ornate frame like that one looks wonderfully modern.

Would you be hanging it over a sideboard? If so, the shape allows you to hang it a little higher than the usual few inches, and arrange things on the surface in front of it...like a group of white ironstone pitchers, some chunky candlesticks, your grandmother's silver tea service, your husband's priceless collection of Staffordshire dogs, a pair of bronze pheasants, or whatever pleases you...

And while you're at it, would you please send me those iced tea glasses in front of the mirror!

Bronwynsmom - It would have to go smack on the main wall in the first pic. We'd get to look at ourselves eating as DH keeps saying. I have a hutch (that I don't love the style but was my Grandmothers so I can't part) to the left of the table and it has both the bottom and top part so there's no room to hang it.

I like the idea of painting the frame also. If I weren't thinking of any other factors other than the straight on view of the mirror, I still pick mirror. Once I think about the reflection I'm more hesitant. I also don't love my kitchen area. I didn't think about my refrigerator placement and I'd get to see that also.

Ha this picture was taken at least a year ago so those glasses aren't there anymore. I frequent that thrift store weekly. There's a ton of junk but I still like to rummage.
