What machine to buy for my daughters

What is a good basic machine to buy my adult daughters-both fairly beginners. I am not impressed with the reviews on the lower end Singer models I have read. I have been sewing on the same basic ELNA since 1992 and love it. Can you still buy basic machines, or are they a thing of the past. I think service/advise from a dealer would be good for my daughters too.

Good basic machines are not a thing of the past, BUT, new ones are expensive.
Do your daughters live near you? If so, I'd visit my favorite dealer and ask about good, solid basic machines that have been traded in for fancier models. They probably would also offer classes and support which are invaluable for new sewists.

I'd stay away from a new lower end Singer. But the older ones are great (pre 1960 or so)

Janome is supposed to have a pretty good machine for around $300.00 (and I think they make the Sears/Kenmore machines) That is the least expensive machine I have heard anyone recommend. Janome Gem, I think. Carolyn
