Alternative to Shaw farmsink?

Hi,

I like the Shaw sink but I am looking for a good alternative. I can't deal with the headache of the irregular dimensions. I am going semi-custom so I can't just drop off the sink and have my cabinet made to fit. Can you recommend another sink or supplier?

I'm thinking of going with the Westbrass apron front sink. There is a 30" sink that is dimensionally similar to the Shaw, but it's made out of quartz and is supposed to be more durable, less prone to cracking at the disposal, etc. Of course this comes from Westbrass themselves, but I do like the sink. It comes with two finished sides, so you can have a fluted front or a recessed panel front.

Did you look at the Kohler farmhouse styles? I think they're called Dickinson and Alcott (one is 24" or so, the other is 30" or 36", don't remember which is which, sorry), and I think they are fireclay. They're available through HD among many other places, and can be semi-customized with a few available embossing designs. I think prices started at $800 for the larger one. I nearly went that route but fell in love with the Shaw's instead. The sides are thinner on Kohler's.

I was also going to suggest the Kohler farmhouse sink, but the ones I saw were by Villeroy & Boch. They are fireclay just like the Shaws. The main difference that I noticed is the size of the rim on the Kohler. It is much thinner than the Shaw's sink. I figured for what I would be saving, I could handle a thinner rim! Check them out!

just fyi, it's really not much of a headache at all.

but, to answer your question, i've always loved the herbeau apron fronts, but they're more expensive then the shaw's, even.

Well, all of the fireclay sinks will be irregular, that's just a property of how they are made. Some have less curves, which does make them a little easier to scribe. The Franke ones are the ones made by Villeroy and Boch. That's what we have. The corners are square, not rounded, their edges are thinner than the Shaws, and they are less expensive. We're very happy with ours.

Another alternative is a stainless steel farm sink; which is a way to put a modern spin on a traditional type of sink, and those would be much more regular.

The fireclay farm sink from IKEA hangs from the countertop so it's irregularity is less of an issue. Also, one thing I love about it is that it goes completely back to the wall, eliminating 6 square feet of granite plus the need to cut out the sink hole. This is a significant granite savings in addition to the wonderful $300 price tag on the sink.

As of now, it looks like gardenwebbers have crashed Ikeas sink page!

Have you looked at the carved stone sinks on ebay? Really gorgeous, really pricey. The method *should* mean the sinks are more dimensionally accurate.
