New print - stack with the existing?

Bought this picture today.

**I'm not willing to add matting or change the frames. I AM ok with painting the frames. The new picture frame is wood but the gold is rather garrish. I think it would benefit from a little black paint drybrushing.**

Would it look odd to stack this above the other print?

The new print and frame is smaller than the picture on the wall but the new frame is beefier. Not sure if it works. If not, it's ok I'll use it somewhere else in the house.

I need to glue and clamp the one corner.

Here's a shot of the whole room. The blue thing is a cat toy.

Had you thought of hanging it on the adjacent wall above the table beside your wing chair or centered over the wing chair/table grouping?

I wouldnt stack them as I think it will be too much on the wall for the delicate table and chair below. Why not hang the new print over on the wall to the left of the opening which will connect it with the existing one on the right side? It will matter less then that the frames are so different. I would not paint the frame on the new piece - it seems perfect with the print.

I thought it was probably too much to stack them.

I'm ok with trying it somewhere else in the room.

That main wall of the room has been a problem. I'm looking to do a grouping but so far I'm lacking the rest of the group. :) Haven't found anything that I love yet.

Les, I have this half table there and Mr. bushy plant. This corner seems too much and I've considered getting rid of the one of the items.
The table is 30"W, the picture is 26".
Please ignore the stuff on the table. There's a small bowl with decorative balls there now.
    {{gwi:1595206}}
Again, ignore the mirror. The table is more centered now also.

I like the corner with Mr. Bushy (adds height and color to the corner) and your new print (I grew up with that print). Maybe you could hang it a little higher and find something larger/taller to add to the table. The bowl/balls are nice but maybe a little small.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Move Mr. Bushy plant to the corner opposite the TV cabinet. It needs a bigger plant.

Move the small plant to the corner where Mr. Bushy was. Put the clock from the table by the wing chair on the demilune by the small plant, with the bowl of balls. Add a pair of candlesticks there for some additional height if you have them. Then hang the new pix there.

Take the lamp from the table next to the spider chair (it is too large for that table) and put it on the table by the wing chair.

Les - I'll try that arrangement tonight. You helped me switch some things around the last time I was attempting to adjust this room but I'm not sure you saw the end result.

I don't think the clock and bowl will both fit on the demilune table. Just because the legs of the clock bow out really wide.

Any ideas what else, if anything, should go on the small table beside the web chair once I move the lamp?

My computer was down last night. :(

Here's the room rearranged. The stuff did fit on the half table. The colors coordinate well with the pic but it seems like a lot of stuff. I'm not used to seeing any of this so I'm not sure what I think of the changes.

Before someone starts suggesting moving all the main furniture pieces around. I can't. I've tried everything and either the pieces are too big or the room isn't shaped right to fit. Someday I'll hopefully have the room a little different.

Thanks for making some changes. I do like the lamp on the other table better, and I think Mr. Bushy plant works better in that big empty corner.

I am not crazy about the plant stand in the corner with the demilune table. I think they fight one another. I would actually use that plant out in the foyer on the stone-look pedestal, instead of the small urn. Add some curly willow branches coming out of the top of the planter for some height to help fill the corner in the foyer.

Then try the fern in the urn on the floor beside the pedestal.

Put the clock on the left side of the table, the candlesticks on the right, as our eyes read from left to right, and so it will make more visual sense if the tallest piece is on the left. Consider finding candles in a deeper gold or burgundy to compliment the colors in the art, rather than the plain white.

I understand about not moving all the furniture around - I know you have tried many things. But I dont quite understand having the huge armoire/tv cabinet stuffed into the corner, and then having a ton of wall space to fill on the end wall. Would you consider moving the cabinet to the place where the wing chair and table are now? Then you could create a seating arrangement on either side of that corner where the cabinet was, pairing the wing chair and spider chair, perhaps using the demiline to span the corner between them with the lamp. I think the cabinet will look more in balance, and the seating arrangement will make more sense than having the two chairs straddling it.

Very well elaborated. Well, If you place your picture on the side with a plant. I would rather suggest to move your plant or it is advisable also to place it in after the door over a chair.

Les - You know, out of all the arranging I've done, I haven't tried that yet. :) The TV was in the corner after one of the rounds of suggestions here - after I broke the entertainment stand up. The TV jack is off center to the left of that main wall so the cords will probably show. I'll try and convince DH tonight to move it. TV stand in the middle..
"Then you could create a seating arrangement on either side of that corner where the cabinet was, pairing the wing chair and spider chair, perhaps using the demiline to span the corner between them with the lamp."
So the two chairs on the left side of the stand, one on each side of the corner with that larger table in the corner between them? The chairs are very much different in scale, you really think they wouldn't look odd that close to each other? The small table beside the web chair, any idea where to use him? It was my Mom's so I have to find a place somewhere in my house whether it's here, a bedroom (it's probably too short) or the office that we're working on.

I agree the plant stand and demilune table looks funky side by side. I'll try switching the plants and stand around. I'm not sure how that's going to work with the fern/urn on the floor. My three cats are honestly pretty good about my stuff but since it's something "new", we'll see. I'll try it since the plants are silk.

The demilune table - clock left, candles right. The candles should also flow tall to small, right? I'm ok with buying different color candles I just grabbed what I had for now. Should I get thick ones or regular tapers? Keep the bowl there? Do you like the picture above the demilune table?

Lori - I love that mirror and it's currently against the floor in the spare room. :( The mirror above the web chair and small table? I'll take a look at that too, thanks!

    Stay tuned everyone! Thanks!

Been thinking about this more and I know the main wall looks goofy the way it is, but if I center the e. stand on the main wall it's taking that weight and putting in the middle of the room. The rest of the weight of the room is on the right side. I could move Bushy plant over to the left with the chairs.

    Thoughts on that?

    last modified: 11 years ago

These are definitely an old photos *cringe*. Pretend the sides of the e. stand aren't there and now picture the wing and spider chair with a table somewhere on the left.
    ??
Please keep in mind the couch is what you're seeing on the right side of these two photos so there would be more space to the wall there. How it's arrange now (all the other photos above) the loveseat is in front of the window.

Hmm.. I feel like I'm talking to myself and am getting a slight complex over this one.

I take the stuff down to the bones (removing accessories/art) and I feel the house is very naked. I add stuff back in and it feels cluttered. I'm not sure where the happy medium is with me. I'm sure it's the way I'm arranging things.

Here's the plant stand gone. I like it better this way. The blank wall plate is covering a hole where my thermostat once was. The screw above it can come out but that's where I once had that skinny mirror. (shown above)

Here are red candles I had. I like the color better but think I like the size of the shorter ones best.
If I put the picture here, should it match the height of the one on the other wall?

DH isn't home right now to move the e.stand. Haven't talked to him about it yet. We have a lot going on over the next week so I'll have to wait on that. Still curious of your thoughts to my questions above.

I dont know if this would work, but would the little chair you just found, along with the little table that was your moms, fit in the corner of the entry, sitting angled in the corner, to replace the plants and stand? The seat would be pretty recovered in a real or faux needlepoint or petitpoint. A nice place for people to put on or remove shoes, etc. Looks like there is a plug there, so the small lamp from the chest in the entry on that table would be pretty, along with the little roses arrangement that was on that little table in the living room.

Let the floral arrangement on the entry hall chest be the star. It looks like there is too much stuff on there.

I think the tv cabinet will look much better moved over to the wall. Remember that it doesnt HAVE to be centered - let the placement be dictated by the view from the couch and loveseat.

On that subject, why did you flip the couch and loveseat? I think the couch on the window wall makes more sense, and the loveseat wouldnt create as much of a visual and physical barrier in the entry to the room from the front hall.

I would look for a nice floor lamp to add on the end down near the tall plant, regardless of which piece ends up in front of the window. In that large a room, you definitely need more light.

I know the wing and spider chairs are different styles, but I wouldnt worry about it. They are both a more formal feel, and with the lamp and table between them, should create an interesting spot. Use the wing chair on the side closer to the TV cabinet, to bring some softness and break up all the wood.

When you are ready to add another piece of furniture in the LR, I would look for a large round, glass-topped coffeetable.

If you remove the pedestal from the entry with the two plants, put the pedestal and the two plants near the cabinets on the side closer to the window wall I am thinking that might be a dead corner there.

*I wanted to mention before, I will be tearing the carpet off the steps and painting the railings and treads dark brown.

The two chair with the table won't all fit in the corner. The space isn't wide enough. Here's a shot I took last night of just one chair there. I agree too much greeery in one area.
    {{gwi:1765989}}

The single floral arrangement centered on the buffet?

I did try your suggestion last time with the couch in front of the window. I just thought the couch ended up too close to the front/main wall and there was enough room to walk around the couch where it is now. The loveseat stops around the edge of the window frame. Here's some shots from when I tried that. Do you still think they look better flopped? Here's photos showing the couch in front of the window instead of the loveseat.
My current LR set up has the furniture pulled back more than in these next few photos.

You mean put the pedestal and two plants here?

    Shee,
I know you said couches & all stay, but have you thought about removing the loveseat (maybe use it in your basement?) Then you could look for a club chair on CL? Sofa in front of window with a club chair at an angle to the sofa in front of shelves? Then you could center the TV on the main wall with your other chairs around on the side walls? (Does that make any sense?!)

I'm also thinking....perhaps have a table skirt made for one of your tables? You have big upholstered sofas & small, leggy tables.

Im just thinking out loud....I know you have struggled with this room. You have very pretty furniture & it will all come together!! Isn't it funny how bringing one new thing in causes a domino effect?!

    Smiles:)

Scooby - I was just thinking about your house tonight and the thought crossed my mind to get rid of it all and search for copy cats of yours, lol.

Club chair, Visually I think it would look better to get rid of one of the large pieces but it takes away seating when company comes over so I'm hesitant. I know you didn't say leather but I spied some beautiful leather furniture on CL some time ago. *sigh* DH is anti leather because you stick to it . . ..and he has his heart set on a sectional for his man room.

Yep I see it - big furniture and leggy tables. I feel like I have too much furniture in this room. I'm considering giving my sister the marble half table since she likes it so much. I can't picture a skirted table.

Here's a shot of one of the chairs and tables in the foyer corner. They just fit. Everything's on the one side of the wall though..(table, chair, buffet, mirror)

    Hi Guys,
It's empty because I put everything in the front yard with a free sign. ... ;)

It currently looks like the last pictures with the column in the room. The small chair is alone in the corner of the foyer.

We haven't moved the stand yet. My brother in law is getting married this weekend and we're both in the wedding so we've been helping with that and my aunt and uncle from out of state are coming in Wed. to stay with us for a week. I know it was mentioned the stand doesn't need to be centered on the main wall but I think that will drives me nuts and I don't think the two chairs and table will fit on the left side nice if it's centered. I also feel like if it's off centered more to the right, it's just going to add to off balance weight issue. ? If I could move the stand myself it would be done but it's miserable to move and DH is less than thrilled about moving it yet again. You know, the "what's wrong with where it's at?.."

I did hang the picture above the half table last night. I'll take a picture later tonight.

Any thoughts about how the room is currently? The stand will probably have to wait until the end of July because of the stuff I mentioned above.

I'm just so frustrated with this room and feel like it looks terrible.

Hi. I know you have tried SO many times to configure this room over the years. Have you ever made a floorplan on graph paper to scale? That will help tremendously! Taking the time to do that saves the frustration of moving furniture. At least you can play on paper and move things around to see if it works BEFORE actually doing the back breaking work (and frustrating your DH). It will give you a good idea of space from a bird's eye view.

    last modified: 11 years ago

I haven't actually sat down with graph paper but I've plugged every dimension of everything on furniture arranger things online. I wish that one opening wouldn't be there or would be down more, making the wing chair wall bigger.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Ok ... looking at this more.

If the entertainment stand is centered and I put the wing chair closest to it (on the left side), web chair to the left of the wing (shorter wall) with table in between... I then have all leggy things on one side of the room.

Still think this is a good idea? I'm trying to really think this through before moving the stand.

I actually like how the room looks better since I took out the small table beside the wing chair. Less legs.

Les, What do you think of the couch and loveseat pics flipped? (above)

I'd be working on graph paper about now.

I like your original layout with the entertainment center centered on the wall.

Without being able to see everything at once I would center the sofa at the window and place the loveseat facing it on the opposite side of the room. Then fill in the empty spaces and eliminate pieces you don't need.

    last modified: 11 years ago

I didn't think there was anything wrong with originally but everyone (here) suggested I change it. It was mentioned the room looked off balance, biggest thing that came up was there was too much space in the middle, and all the tiny, leggy things were on one side of the room. (I had the spider chair and a different leggy table in the left corner when you walk in) So began the start of musical chairs. I tried floating furniture and angling furniture etc.
    The couch dimensions are 102"W x 40"D x 39"H. Loveseat 75"W x 40"D x 39"H.

Natal, the graph paper thing is the same as plugging every dimension in on the computer which I've already done countless times.
"Without being able to see everything at once I would center the sofa at the window and place the loveseat facing it on the opposite side of the room. Then fill in the empty spaces and eliminate pieces you don't need."

For 3 years? You poor thing! I still like your original version. Looks you had the sofa and loveseat up against the walls. Did you? And if so, did you try pulling them out away from the wall a bit to reduce the empty space in the middle?

I understand liking to view the TV head on. We don't have that luxury in the living room except for from one chair. Our room is even worse than yours. Then again, we don't have near as much furniture.

I still think the sofa needs to be centered at the window. In every picture where it's not it throws everything off. The love seat is too small for that area. Remove the sofa end table, move the sofa so it's centered and then place the love seat where the sofa is now. Put the end table at the end of the sofa closest to the entertainment center. Put a floor lamp between the sofa and loveseat. Move the wing chair closer to the end table.

Take everything else out of the room and then slowly bring some of it back. I think you have way more than you need.

Can you use the loveseat in another room? If so, I would try the ec all together on the solid wall, sofa facing it (floating in the room), and chairs flanking. And get a coffee table. It's a shame to break up the sofa and loveseat but I wonder if this wouldn't solve all the issues?
