Tuscan painting above new sofa, what do you think?

I found a painting of Camogily, Italy, its a small town fishing village, at Slumberland, I think it looks great with my sofa. I usually prefer a floral, my couch description was tuscan, would you like this tuscan print in your living room?? Would you decorate the ledge above with things that match the picture?? Will Paris fleur de lis terra cotta jars CLASH?? . Can I mix tuscan and parisian?? I do have Parisian restaurant and hotel pics, and roosters displayed close to the living room.

I love it! I think each complements the other, and the touch of black in each grounds it.

I'm thinking, as a whole, all the colors are very hot. I'd try out something with more blue, also, to see what you think. It also feels too much like the pillows, imo. The framing is very striking with your sofa.

I should have said cool. Lots of green would be good too.

    Perfect! Well done! :)

AFTER you've hung it -- try removing the two pictorial cushions from the sofa. Then stand back -- and look again. Try those pretty cushions on separate chairs.

Keep things simple! :) Works like a charm everytime!

Thank you for your opinions. I will play with those pillows, perhaps move one, once I have another chair or two. I'm looking for club chairs, trying to avoid ordering the MATCHING overstuffed chair I love. Can I have permission to order it ??

I wouldn't order more of the same thing if you are trying to avoid matching the sofa. Have you considered a similar chair type in leather with a higher back or perhaps a complementary fabric with a skirt. I think rooms usually look better if every piece of furniture is not at the same height and the feet/bottom of the furniture are not all redundant .

If you are buying the artwork as a decorative item to fit with the sofa (rather than "oh, my goodness, I must have this picture!"), then I would opt for a wider picture, one that is 3/4 to 7/8 the width of the sofa.

I really like it. Also like your sofa!

Well -- I love the chair/ottoman too! LOL! The ottoman can provide additional seating or even sit on one side of the sofa.

And then try to find a leather one ..... just to mix things up a bit!

I think the painting is perfect, and I love the matching chair! I agree with teacats, order it and find a leather one to add to the mix. It's all gorgeous!

P.S. Where did you find the sofa/chair? They are beautiful!

I think the painting is perfect for the room. I would not hang it over the couch though. It seems almost too matchy-matchy with the print on the couch, and the details in the painting get lost because the size of the details is so similar to the size and color of the couch.

Although the photography may distort things a bit, the painting looks a bit too tall, especially when it is going to be hung higher than it is sitting on the couch right now.

It is a lovely painting and should be more of a focal point in the room rather than a backdrop to a couch. Is there another place you would like to see it in the room?

I think the painting is a perfect choice, you couldn't find a better match. And you have permission to buy the chair.

    Another opinion coming in...

No, you don't have permission to order the chair, but you may use the painting, but not with the mat (or is that an inner frame?) it's in.
You need some lightness there...I would give it a larger, thinner frame, and a white or ivory inner bit...if it's a mat, a mat. If it's an inner frame, or if the painting is floated on a backing mat or board, I'd use a wide linen liner.

As it is, it is a little dark, and the heaviness of the frame overwhelms the delicacy of the detail in the picture. In my view...

Here's what I mean by a linen liner...

So far I'm with Jan (teacats) on everything she said. So just double up the tally on her suggestions.

I love the print too and I think it looks great above the sofa but may I ask where you got those pillows with the italy scenes on them.

Not my taste to have the matchy matchy grouping of chairs, pillows, sofas, and on and on, so, please don't buy the chair and do remove the pictoral pillows and get another painting. The painting is very nice but way too small as well, the colors are too hot. The artwork should be somewhat taller but much wider to prevent that "mushroom" look. Your artwork should always be 66% to 80% the width of your piece of furniture. You totally lose the excellent look that I think you are trying to create by having everything look alike. Your sofa is very pretty. The painting is very pretty. The occasional chair is very pretty and the pillows (well) are passable, but not all together.

Now flame me, flame me but you asked and if you ask, expect that not all will agree with you.

I am so sorry but I do not want you to commit decorating murder.

I think the art works in the room, but not above the couch. It is too small there, unless you consider adding sconces on either side, which can then make it difficult if you want to add lamps and end tables. But it is also too matchy-matchy, which ends up with both pieces feeling less interesting to the eye.

I would instead look for some artwork that pulls some green tones onto the wall, to balance all the browns and rusts you have.

I love the chairs but there is something called 'too much of a good thing". LOL I would look for something in a deeper tone, either leather or fabric. Perhaps a different arm, like a london arm, or at least no nailheads, and no bun feet.

No No not the picture and the pillows together.

Does this picture really speak to you? I ask because there's a couple zillion that look almost the same, all with the names of various villages. Wouldn't you rather have some thing a little more personal? If not, feel free to ignore my 2 cents.

Looks like its about a 50/50 yah , nay. I do have golden crackle sconces with dark bases that I could add but I think they distract from the picture. I read that a picture should be 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the sofa and its 61%, I'm surprised to hear its too small. If something doesn't match, I don't buy it, so only things that match speak to me, and I bring everything sample from the house with me when I shop!!! I guess that's how its always been, and its so hard to stop!!!True confessions from a matchy matchy girl. Noone has addressed the ledge above, but that is a huge concern. Would you decorate the ledge to blend with the painting??? Maybe you would NEVER match it,should I take back the fleur de les stuff,80% off from Hobby Lobby, and I have to return within ONE week. I still can't figure out how I'll incorporate it???

Is this the wall the couch MUST go on? Is there a TV in the room or a fireplace or anything else that must be considered with furniture placement? This wall looks too short and will look very crowded when end tables and lamps are added along with all the other stuff overhead and behind the couch. It is bad feng shui having those big bottles up on the high shelf behind a seated person's head.

Do you have a floorplan already planned out for the room?

Yes to the painting...but add sconces or solid colored small plates on either side.
Yes to the ledge... but add some greenery trailing down.
Yes to the chair and otto... but add a leather or solid chair as well.
(One of the "picture" pillows can go on the solid or leather chair.)
    Lovely couch...pretty room!

How about showing the whole space and/or floor plan?

I would leave the ledge empty -- until you get side tables (maybe mis-matched ones! LOL! just teasing!) -- with matching lamps.

THEN hang the artwork -- and just see if the area above needs anything.

Let the artwork/sofa/seating area shine -- and keep things simple! :)

Do you recall where you read that?

    http://www.studiotreasure.com/articles/interior/Wall-Art.htm

Graywings, I just googled how wide should a picture be, and found a couple decorators opinions saying 1/2-2/3.

I hung the picture today, and cleared off the ledge.

Big 50 party in two days, maybe I should start focusing on entertaining !! Thanks for everyones help. I will get back to decorating next week. Right now I'm looking for some strong men to dissassemble 4 pieces of reclining leather and move it to the basement, I don't think thats going to happen before Saturday either!!

Thanks for the info about the 1/2 - 2/3 guideline. Sometimes the decorating guidelines change, especially when you are talking about modern rooms, so I wanted to read more about this.

Brown club recliner is getting delivered tommorrow for living room, it has nailheads,( sorry Les) its also discontinued, so I can only get ONE. If I don't like it its returnable. I also bought the same reclining furniture I have in the sunroom, for the basement again being delivered tomorrow. I'm excited!! Talk about matchy-matchy.,,I have 7 pieces of Lane-Alpine, in putty, and we love it!! That's all that matters right??

I agree with dilly dally - it's too much alike to be that close. and it's too small for there and the mat doesn't do much for it. mat might be ok when moved away from sofa - and lighting would change on it.

    no, don't buy that chair.

Here's the new leather recliner they delivered this am, same style as sofa, I really like it!! Is it a keeper in your eyes??
