WOW!!! PERFECT! I did a horrible job with the butterflies on my Shower panel, I was trying for the greatness you have succeeded in!! Again, Perfection!!!

Thank you, guys! This is quite a project. The part I did (in the photos) is actually the centerpiece of a much larger limestone circle located on the ground at the entrance to their butterfly garden. Surrounding the Monarch centerpiece will be many tiles made by the 5th graders. Then the outside circle is limestone blocks. I will post another picture after I have installed it. I have mosaiced onto sections of mesh - each wing is a separate piece, the body is separate, and so forth. When I install it at the school, it will be like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Another interesting thing about this project is that for the background I chose the lilac blue tiles which I already had on hand, but I didn't have enough, so I included the pale blue, Still didn't have enough, so included the half-tiles of white and turquoise, Still didn't have enough! so ended up adding some white marbles! In the end, I like the effect. I ran completely out of the lilac blue tile. Whew!

What is the backing?? Is that mesh?? and then you are going to install it into the limestone?? It will be striking!! We want to see when you are done!!

Haha I know, it is funny! All my mosaics are haphazard. I usually run out of stuff and have to make-do, or I change direction and pop stuff off. Yes, it is mesh and it is a life-saver. I am able to sit at home in comfort and create the whole thing, then stack the pieces up and install quickly at some other location. It even works well on vertical pieces.

Are those dichroic globs you used?

Calamity, yes, those are dichroic globs. I used 10 of them; the photo doesn't capture their beauty. They are predominately orange with a touch of green, fused onto black. I love dichroic and wish I could use tons of it on everything I do. These particular globs I bought off eBay years ago and I hoarded them all this time. Then I thought: Heck, why not just throw them in for the wow factor.

Oh... it's beautiful!!! And... your variety of colors in the background is perfect! It's much more interesting than it would have been plain. Wonderful job! And... it will be enjoyed for years and years!

Beautiful!! Monarchs are my favorite butterfly...usually get to see bunches of them every spring and fall. LOVE to see YOUR monarch in my garden....LOL!! It is truly perfect for the children's butterfly garden!
