Curtain panel help please

Have been googling for hours and can't find an answer...

We live in a 1970's house that have built-in valances (I think they're called) above the windows. They run the entire length of the wall in most of the rooms in the house. They hang about one foot down from the ceiling and are about 5" out from the wall/window area. All of them have the old tracks/rods for curtains up inside of them. The valances cannot be removed. I hope I explained that so it makes sense!

Today I bought a decorative rod and some panels to put in the dining room. Do you think it's possible to hang them on the outside of the valance thing about halfway up, or is that not an option? If the panels can be hung there, would I have to hang them across the entire wall, or could they just cover the sliding glass doors? Are those things actually called valances or is there another name for them?

I bought the panels with the loops on the top and don't want to have them hidden inside the valance with just the bottom inch or so visible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

dee
