Need help with this dated kitchen

I want to redo this whole kitchen in a few years, but can anyone give me some quick in expensive updates that would allow me to hold out for a few more years?

Remove the valance, paint the upper cabinetry with gray melamine paint in a shade much like the countertop or lighter. Paint the lower ones black. Paint wood strips to match the backsplash color or cover them with the new metallic aluminum wrap. Paint walls the light gray of the upper cabinets. Put in some undercounter LED puck lights. Tackle the overhead lighting by replacing the flourescent with a stylish chandy. pendant above a rolling work table or use a flush mount chandy without a cart or table. Start replacing the appliances with stainless or your preference as they fail or funds allow.

only paint the wood trim on the cabinets. a coordinating color or black. paint the green cabinet on the right, if possible. yes, to decoenthusiaste -- lose the florescent tube and add puck lights under cabinets
storage cabinet on right looks a little out of place here. Can it go on another wall nearby, or paint it black. then black microwave. should help some.

Hmmm. You don't say what your budget is, so my suggestions are trying to keep it all under $500. My guess is that the cabinets are like formica (nonporous) and will not take paint well and would wind up with scratches and chips in a short amount of time. (I must admit, I have never used the melamine paint suggested above. It might work just fine, but I tend to be a skeptic.) Therefore, an easier and longer wearing fix might be to paint the wood trim only, painting it the same EXACT white as the cabinet doors (to make them blend away) and then add some inexpensive long door/drawer pulls from Ikea (all horizontal is a nice look, in either silver or black tone). With all those white cupboards, you will need to add some color on the floor and update the backsplash. For the backsplash and flooring, you might consider using peel and stick tile; possibly a "stone-look" for the backsplash and a "wood-look" for the floor - until you can afford the real things. (Actually, they've come a LONG WAY and look MUCH better than it sounds and better than what you currently have. HomeDepot and Lowes both have some really thick, durable ones for just round a buck or so each.) A bright and cheery paint color (Whatever compliments the floor and backsplash you choose --- maybe apple green? turquoise? or maybe a vivid orange?) with a cheery curtain that has coordinating colors, to give it some pop! With an inexpensive countertop microwave to match the other black appliances, you might be pretty happy with your new kitchen until your ship comes in. It looks like you have good bones to work with. Best wishes. : )

I rather like its clean lines and the colors. I think painting it gray and dark grey would make it dark and cramped feeling.

Painting the wood trim or covering with metal could be a quick fix, but they do get a lot of wear and trap water (I used to have some), and look to be in pretty good shape.. Maybe something really hard wearing, like epoxy paint or oil enamel, would work. I would scrub with ammonia and a small brush to make sure you get all the accumulated dirt out of all the crevices, dry well a couple of days and prime first.

The folurescent light is ugly. Besides the puck lights, a bit of moliding concealing tube lights to reflect up off the ceiling at night could look nice. I think they come in LED now. Or maybe some recessed lighting. You are going to need some overhead as well as undercounter light.. Painting the trim on the skylight to match the ceiling might help as well.

Replace the valance with bamboo or silver metal blinds?

I like the green paint. It could be painted, but going to gray-maroon--beige--black only color scheme will make it look cold. Maybe adding a jute rug by the sink, the bamboo blinds, some wood bowls, and some plants could warm it up a bit. A softer more olive type green might be nice.
