mid-range suggestions

I'm looking for help from experts out there...We are remodling our house. We need to replace old alum. windows. We'd like to change the location and size of many of the existing windows and doors. We are on a tight budget. We need around twenty windows and four sets of french doors. We are in a one story ranch and live in a very moderate climate (no a/c). So I don't need super high end windows because of severe weather, nor do I have the need of super huge windows. I'd like the nicest windows I can get, but can't afford Marvin or Lowen. I'd say our budget lends itself to half that of a Marvin. I spoke with a builder surplus place today, they carry a lot of Pella windows, but they were so amazingly useless and rude I left there shop feeling like I'd buy vinyl replacements before I'd buy from them. Unfortunely, I think what they offer is right in my budget, and right what I'm looking for. Where can I go???? What is a good mid range window that is not a simple vinyl replacement??? Can anyone help??? PLEASE! THANKS!!
