Had a scrap piece of MDF, and got my jigsaw and just started cutting a random shape.

I tend to work very symmetrically, and this was my attempt to break away from that completely. Hence the bold colors, too.

I made a special trip to my local Walmart yesterday and they had nothing on sale. The ones here were packaged differently. Obviously they don't all have the same things on sale or even carry the same things. Pffft!!!

I am admiring that mirror-I have a question. I have tried to mosaic to the edge like she has done in the mirror piece and I find that if I DONT create a border, my pieces and grout tend to fall off. What am I doing wrong?

I'm finding that if I bring the edges on the sides and the edges on the top as close together as possible, it leaves a narrower grout line. I wish I had put the front edge on first in my bathroom project, cuz I could have come closer to it w/the top of the counter, and left a smaller grout line. I'm a slow learner. I also put glue in my grout when I'm worried about it coming off the edge of something. I took GPSIE's advice on mosaicing the switchplate (grouting today), and siliconed a tiny ball chain around the edge, hoping to hold the grout on better. That way, I'm hoping the grout covers the chain so the plate w/blend into the backsplash design w/o much notice. I'll also put glue into the mortar/grout mixture.

The way I get my edge clean on pieces...

After I've grouted I take a finger, spatula, flat edge, etc. around to clean up the excess grout. If it is not too thin it is easy enough to do, but if it is thin I just let it set up a bit then clean.

Slow, when you say you add glue are you talking about Weldbond? Are you just using a small amount or a cup full? I remember Hazie saying she used glue but didn't ask her about it. Are you also using the mix additive in your grout or is the glue in place of the additive? thanks!

Lilym, I suggest you always take what you want to the register because I've found that Walmart doesn't always mark things but they are discounted at the register. I've been searching for some Burpee watering cans from Walmart. Mine sold them out for $2.50 but I was too late. A few other stores have them marked down to $5. but only one store had it marked. The other store had them on the shelf with regular price but at the register it was marked down to $5. So that's my lesson.

D3: Yes, Weldbond, and I don't measure, but for - oh, I'd say about the size of a 16 oz cottage cheese container - of "grout", I'd probably squeeze out about two/three tablespoons as I'm adding the water. ESIMATE, mind you - no real measurement. I don't have to put the admixture into my grout cuz I use the Mapei brand, and it already has it. For my bathroom project, I used ABOUT equal parts of Mapei sanded grout - Keracolor - to the Mapei Ultra Flex mortar. Let me tell you, those tiles aren't moving already, BEFORE "grouting", but after the grouting w/my mixture, I wouldn't be surprised if when archeologists dig up in the rubble of the ruins of this house, they'll find the counter/backsplash all in one piece. LOL. When I had to correct the black line WENCH mentioned I had to use a screwdriver and hammer to dislodge those pieces. Also, when I had replaced the white wall tiles on the right (in the last picture I submitted) the grout line was too wide, so I buttered some glass beads w/the grout mixture and stuck them in. I've tested them and they're not budging. Really tough stuff. I LOVE that mortar as an adhesive/grout.
