Mad Men Style

I admit I'm hooked, I'm a certified madaddict!! I love Mad Men on AMC.

For those who haven't seen it (you really must!!), it's an award-winning TV show that airs on Sunday nights, set in NYC's advertising world in the early 1960's, that concentrates on Don Draper, creative director, and those in his life, both in and out of the office. It's known for its historical accuracy and visual style.

I am particularly in love with Anna Draper's California home, specifically her tropical blue LR walls and her patterned curtains. I think they're called bark cloth? I would love to find curtains like that for my BR. I have inherited my grandmother's old BR set, it's a lighter color wood with brass knobs, a very well-made 1960s style.

I haven't been on this forum in awhile, as summer is my busy time of year. So I searched here and couldn't find any similar threads, which I can't believe, but oh well.

Please help me, style addicts, what color are those walls? Any other tips or advice about creating Anna's laid back 1960s style? Thanks!!!

Search here for the terms MCM or mid century modern. Mad Men really embraces the era. From Roger Sterling's hardcore MCM office with the Saarinen tulip table, to Don Draper's more subdued Danish modern office, to Betty's house with the traditional/colonial of the period and to Anna Draper's much more casual California cottage.

You can find vintage barkcloth on ebay. And a lot of antique malls will have a booth or two of folks who do linens and textiles and you may find some there. Use the terms "retro" and "vintage" when searching on ebay, craigslist, etc. When I think of the '50s cottage I also think of Heywood-Wakefield and a touch of Tiki.

    Great advice, jakabedy, as usual.

My favorites are the offices. I'd like to live in them. :)

There's a number of interviews with the set decorator, Amy Wells.

And Set Decor magazine is always a good place to look for information about TV shows.

I laughed out loud when I saw Sally's plaid jumper on the last episode. I had that exact same jumper, although the plaid was just a tiny bit different as mine was home-made. I have the picture to prove it! (That would make me about Sally's age, with the same mean mom, minus the blonde hair.) We had boomerang formica and drinking glasses in the kitchen, brand new wall ovens which were the latest thing, and a kitchen lamp over our table you could pull down on a cord. Watching that show is truly a blast from the past, isn't it?

Here's a link to all kinds of barkcloth on e-bay, although I have no doubt you know how to find it yourself. There's quite a bit available, depending on your style. You might also check a good quality upholstery shop. I have one nearby that has fabulous MCM style fabrics that look like the original thing, so that could be an option if you don't find the vintage piece you like.

How about the new offices with the mix of beautiful grays? To die for!

I don't know why I didn't make the MCM connection, duh. I thought that was strictly 1950s styles, but it makes sense that it would carry forward and inform the 1960s styles. I donÂt have Danish Modern furniture then, but I want some. What I have must be older. I have a HW twin bed that was my Dad's, since it seems like my whole family gave me all their old stuff, before it was fashionable again, lucky me! Jakebedy, I also have a carved wood tiki head in my LR! Great websites, thank you, I have learned so much already. I have always gravitated to that era of furniture, and have done a bit of, ahem, curbside recycling. By comparison, new furniture seems so cheaply made.

Ideefixe, great info, also thanks for the link to Set Décor magazine, good (at least) for past articles, and what a treasure trove of inspiration! Subscriptions are unavailable at this time, bummer. I did read the article online.

Oh Claire, sorry about your mom! ((hugs)) I think I watch partly to understand my own (late) mother; it is hard to imagine people really acting that way, unless youÂve been there (I was born in 1961). Betty definitely has a lot of repressed rage. I cut out a plaid jumper to make in home ec, but never sewed it together. ThatÂs the problem really, I canÂt sew. I guess I donÂt care if the curtains are actually vintage, I just want some that look like they are. Remember the TV show that re-created an "inspiration room" on a budget?

And the accessories: I do have the exact same crèche that Anna Draper has on display in her LR in season 4, ep. 3 "The Good News", which was my momÂs. I want that piece that looks like music on the wall. I guess I need to go to the thrift stores.

Homebodymom~What about the primary colors of the sofas in the new outer office? Very striking!
