What I would do is (and yes, you do run the risk of breaking the rooster) is break the base off. Maybe just the part behind the rooster, since his foot shows on the top of the base. But if you lost the WHOLE base, that would make him lay nice and flat in the spoon. I have done this before, and depending on the material, it may work quite nicely: Stand the rooster up, and take a flatedge screwdriver to use as a chisel (unless you happen to have a small chisel!) Place the chisel where you want it to break, and TAP the end of the handle with a hammer. Build up how hard you tap it until it cracks or breaks. You might even be able to work your break right around his foot, a little at a time. If he does break where you don't want him to, just mosaic the parts onto your spoon and call it intentional! Or glue him back together first. Just don't yell at me! <:d you have the other salt shaker to practice on good luck>

Duh...hadn't thought about that!! I can be really stupid sometimes.... I did buy these at an antique shop and would really hate to break the rooster, but its worth a try! Thanks ladyronnie!

You could also use a "cut-off" wheel and a dremel to saw right through the ceramic.

Lady ronnie gives the same advice I would. I've been working on my ceramic faces orb where I cut the faces off of ceramic figurines and glue them to a bowling ball (see WIP photo below).

Sometimes the faces crack in unexpected ways but it's easy enough to silicone them back together if you're careful.

Yep - so do I - use a screwdriver and hammer to tap off the flowers on boxes, and vases. Then w/the wheeled nipper, shape it a bit.

as for that rooster I think I would lose the base and then build it up arround the bottom so then it looks like one peice.

If you want to keep the rooster whole, mosaic the bottom to look like it's sitting on a small shelf

Well...I broke the back of the base off, and of course, it broke off the front part with the foot on it. I glued it back on...and the front base part still sticks out.
Shrty, I'm with you. I looked at the thing this morning, and figured that I would break a saucer and make a small shelf. I think I am going to use a piece of black, or if I can find it, a piece of basket looking saucer. Probably the black though. I have some black shelves in my kitchen, and that ought to blend well. Thanks everyone for the input. As soon as I get to work on it, I'll post a pic.
