Oh, how BEAUTIFUL! I LOVE that hummer - so colorful, and I can't believe you got that much color out of one sheet of glass. What kind is it? You really know how to utilize a sheet of glass. Also, I admire the regularity of your border pieces on the circle - so uniform. What size are those little pieces? What are your plans for the rest of the bench? Gonna be a real beauty.

Your cuts are perfect, not to mention the grout lines looking so uniform - bet that's much less a headache using the mesh. Now, what did you learn to do or not do??

you are so talented, I couldnt even begin to put together something so planned and organized. I have more an eclectic style I just let the piece make itself. what did you use to make those great cuts?

Thank you all for the lovely words!! I feel like I have been doing this project for years!!! I'll be glad when its done..ok let me answer those questions!!!

The border was cut using our favorite cutting system...yup the morton portable glass shop!!! I just love that system!!! They are 1 inch by 2 3/4 inch. I mitered the corners to make the piece seem more finished.

The mesh method worked really well with a few exceptions (my blunders!!) I had a few pieces come off after I applied the thin set because they were just to tiny. They would have come off during grouting. But you really can't see were their missing unless you look.

It (the pieces glued to the mesh) transported wonderfully...I would recommend this method to anyone who cant glue the pieces on to the intended base as it really works well.

The pattern for the bird came from "Walk on the Wild Side" book II by Terra
As for what I am doing with the rest of it that is kinda still up in the air. I have some lighter green tiles that I'm thinking of putting in the rest of the bench except doing a flower framed by a white circle on each side of the bird to give it a little more to look at but not distract from the focal point which of course is the bird!!

I am attaching two pictures of the glass I used on the hummer (front and backside) ... I think it is made by armstrong. The tag on the glass says AR 135
I got it from my local glass store quite awhile ago..it was so pretty I had to get it, at the time I had NO idea what I was gonna do with it!!! I still have plenty of it left to do more cool stuff cause it was a big sheet about 2 feet by 2 feet is still left! It is NOT an easy glass to cut though. It is a lot thicker then spectrum. I believe it to be a hand rolled glass. I cut the hummer with my taurus ring saw...

OMG!! That is soooo beautiful! I'm not fully understanding the mesh method, is there a reason you wouldn't glue it directly to the bench?
That glass is to die for, and it looks wonderful on the hummer! A few people here have a ring saw and seem to be able to cut so perfectly with it, it's on my "save up for" list.

Wow..just WOW!!

Squirrely- the reason I chose to do it on the mesh was kinda a two part reasoning system...
1. I wanted to try it cause I have never done it and

2. I didn't have access to the bench so it was really easy to glue the pieces to the mesh then when that was done pick up my mesh and take it to the bench to thin set it on.

If you were to do a piece on the wall you could use this method instead of having to glue it piece by piece to the wall or if it was a bigger installation you could do it all on the mesh then cut the mesh to smaller more manageable pieces to glue to whatever you are trying to mosaic.

I only have Monday afternoons set in semi-stone, for the painting lessons.
otherwise, there isn't much I schedule for and the
kids start school this week. the little one is in all day care.
no teacher strikes in our district, luckily!

CHICHEE - I had asked in my first post on this thread what sizes are the little rectangles that outline the circle? Now I see how you got all those colors from one sheet. I suppose I have no imagination cuz I wouldn't have bought a sheet of glass w/that many colors. Thanks for that.

When I bought the sheet of glass I had absolutely no idea what I was gonna use it for. I just loved the mix of colors. I have never seen a piece like it again. It was only when I was trying to find the glass for the hummingbird that I saw the possibilities in that glass. Otherwise I think it would have sat on my shelf for a loong time!!!

JUST BEAUTIFUL. What kind of mesh did you use? I haven't tried that yet but have some ideas.

brendak- its called mosaic tile mesh, its a flexible fiberglass cloth. I bought mine online but if you know anybody (bodyshop maybe?) that works with fiberglass they could probably get you some.
