building a table with a leaf

We are having a kitchen island built for our small kitchen and I am just waiting on quotes fr cab makers.

I made a mock up of it and even though we have good clearances, it would be much more convenient if it could be made smaller for some occasions.

I was thinking of having it make with a removeable leaf like in our antique dining table. Drop leaf wont work with our design.

Is it horribly difficult to do this? Does anyone know if this will be a super expensive change to the design? I'm almost afraid to ask the cab makers for fear it will dble the price.

Any info appreciated.

The picture is of the style we want. Ours is to be 36"x65" and I would like it to go down to about 50" long.

The entire design of the table portion would have to be changed to make a removeable leaf. And I would not be surprised if the new design were not close to double---more work, more material, and more time.

The hardware to make a table that takes leaves is purchased. Try Rockler or Van Dyke's.
The hardware has wooden rails and steel tracks and cogs to ensure the movement is even on each side.
It will cost significantly more.

Thanks so much for the replies. We've lived with the mock up for a couple of days now and I think it will work as is. Ideally we'd be able to make it smaller but I'd rather use that money towards somehting else.
