I wonder if you should fill them with thinset or something first (something like concrete but thin enough to be able to fill the egg using a baggie with a hole in one corner or a cake decorating bag). Otherwise, they might be too fragile; they would always have to be handled with care and could be easily crushed by someone who doesn't know what's underneath the mosaic?

Still, though, I think they would be cool to experiment with and I think you should get some and then do some research on what would work best. Oh, and if you're nuts, then I am too, because it sounds like something I would do, bring home a bunch of big eggs and then explain to my hubby why I need them ......

silva - the shells (at least on ostrich eggs) are fairly sturdy - you can carve them with a dremel; but I think the thinset idea is a really good one! Thinking about a design that leaves parts of the shell exposed...h-m-m-m, hadn't thought about trying to explain to DH...maybe I could just sneak them into the crate with our latest batch of orphan kittens, then when he's half asleep tell him it's his turn for feeding them....LOL!!

My uncle raises emus and Ive gotten alot of eggs from him and I have mosaiced one before and it still is fine. Its ugly, but it never broke or anything. Usually I decoupage them and give them as Christmas ornaments. They are very sturdy I blow them and you have to use a dremel to get into them and it is not easy. So I say go for it!

CURB: I would LOVE to have a couple! I have a small collection of wooden and stone eggs and could add my own creations to the stash.

Do you remember the old sugar Easter eggs with the scenes inside. That would be so challanging to cut a window in one and mosaic the inside then just a little on the outside in bands or something. What fun you will have. I know they are very sturdy.

They also make small jewlery boxes out of them by cutting in half. There are tiny hinges you glue on.

There was a guy on Crafters Coast to Coast once that did Emu and Ostrich egg carvings with a dremel. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. I'd say MOSAIC IT! Why not? If it breaks, you have more!

I bought eggs from E Bay . I thought they were emu eggs ..........but aren't emu eggs black ? These are white. I've had them in my china cabinet for ages - waiting for a good project. I might have to try one !
I've used eggshells for mosaics in my beginner years of smashing things. My very first project was a picture frame edged in smashed shells. It wasn't grouted - it was painted dark green , stained - then highlighted with gold. Turned out nice . Eggs aren't just for breakfast anymore !

I didn't know from Emu eggs, so I googled & yes, they are a dark almost black green.
