Snap in grilles or permanent?

Decision time is approaching. We'll be ordering several new windows -- primarily DH and casement. House is traditional colonial. Currently we have single pane true divided light which are charming, but a pain to wash. (Eventually all windows will be replaced).

Originally thought we'd buy SDL (both sides) with bar between panes, but wondering if that is overkill...or whether the snap-in grilles are sufficient?

How obvious is it from the outside, and do those with SDL find cleaning them a chore they wish they didn't have?
