Hi, welcome! There are so many wonderful people here who will help you. What kind of tile do you have? (What are the dimensions, i.e. 4"x4", 3/4" x 3/4", etc., and how thick? Do you have a digital camera? What would you like to make? (Trivet, coffee table, backsplash, etc.) Tell us more.

Welcome to the forum!! I only use stained glass in my projects, but there are several here who use tile. I'm sure someone will jump in and help.

Ditto the above - and welcome to the playground. From your post, I assume you haven't done any research. The internet has so much to offer in tutorials. In this link I'm posting, there are, as you requested, step by step instructions. tutorial. If you are able to get to your library, check out a book on mosaics, and also Google search mosaics for other wonderful sites to help you through the learning process. Amazon.com has used books galore on the subject. This forum has some wonderful artists that are willing to help, but it w/help you to read some on your own. You can also read past posts on this forum for tips and techniques. You'll become addicted to the art in no time, as well as this forum. Again, welcome to the best playground on the net.

Thank you all for the wonderful welcome! I have mostly tile and a little bit of glass. Also I have been saving misc peices of jewelry and beads over the years for just the right project. I thought of making stepping stones as a beginning project. What do you think? Also are the glues etc bad for people with asthma? I have looked at a few sites but feel really intimidated by what I have seen! I read a bunch of posts on here and this seemed like such a friendly site. I am in Washington State and we are into our rainy season.........bored bored bored!

Oh Clearglass .......you don't know what you are getting yourself into . You start out not knowing anything. THEN -- you read a few posts ... you get to thinking - "I can do that" .... that's when it starts - you want to know everythng and keep posting and posting and posting and making pals ! Well Sharon your too far from me..I'm in south Texas or I would help you get started..you can learn from all of us tho.we all just jumped in and started I don't think anyone had classes or anything when they started .I started with a little flower pot then went to a big birdbath...just jump in you'll be glad you did!

You'll NEVER be bored once you start mosaicing, I PROMISE. It will change your life FOREVER!! Get on w/it. Take the hammer, a stepping stone, some thinset and go to town.

Welcome to the best forum on the web! My first project was a stepping stone also. I think they are great because you are working on a flat surface. Had no clue what I was doing, used the wrong glue, etc. They are still hanging in there after 4 years outside. I used tile broken with a hammer, some china and polymer clay stamped with designs.
Some glues that some of us use, like GEII, do have a odor. I have no sense of smell but I keep a window open when I'm working indoor. Don't know about asthma problems with this. Many glues do have respiratory warnings. Maybe you can go to a health site or the individual glue site and find out more. You would definitely need to be careful mixing thinset as it is so dusty. Books are a good place to start but this forum has so many helpful things not covered in books. So, if you'd rather be addicted and fanatic rather than bored, jump right in with the rest of us! Even if you're like me, and don't get that much done, you'll love reading the posts and admiring the beautiful work (and funny comments) here.

If you haven't read the old posts, that's a great place to start. The info there is just overwhelmingly helpful. The ideas will just start to flow. If you see something you want more info on just post to it and it will shoot back to the front page and somebody here will probably be able to help. I did that a lot and still do from time to time. But truly, the best way to find out how/if something works is to just do it!

The costume jewelry will come in real handy! I have just discovered it and man is it fun!!

I wouldn't think that Weldbond would cause a problem with your asthma, but you wouldn't be able to use that for outdoor projects. Anyone who is mixing thinset or grout needs to wear a dust mask so maybe wearing a dust mask might be an option for you??? Plus you're lucky that you have already been accumulating stuff to mosaic with!

Sharon- what part of Washington are you? I am in Graham and Seaglassic is in Tumwater.

Stepping stones are a great way to start. Im doing them with my MIL and her neighbor, they are new to mosaics and wanted to start with something easy. We are actually using the kits for there first time as they don't want to have to grout anything.
