This fireplace is a bump-out. The fireplace in the family/sitting area (the other photo we posted) is a bump-in. Two different fireplaces. Hope that helps.

A bump-out fireplace is one where the firebox extends outside of the house. A bump-in is where it extends into a room. With this fireplace the front of the fire box is flush with the interior wall - the box extends back into the exterior wall. You would see "a bump" on the outside wall of the house, along with the chimney. (If you look at the exterior photo of this project - the one with the front door - you will see the "bump-out" for the fireplace and chimney.) It is only the fire surround that extends into the room. The fire surround is finished with plaster.
