Wall color?

So we got moved and my first focus was the nursery (which is basically done. I have a few more art projects to do. I'll post pics soon!)

Now I'm moving on to the living room. My arch nemesis.

Here it is. Please ignore the stuff on the mantle since it won't be staying there. I'm also open to other furniture arrangements if anyone has suggestions. The front door is to the right of the couch in the first photo.

The two chairs will move into the master bedroom to (hopefully) avoid destruction by children and I will get this chair.

Here is one rug option. It's cheap ($149) so I won't care if the kids destroy the white over time. (What I really want to get is a black and white cow skin rug. I have no idea why this design choice speaks to me, but it does! I can't decide if it would look ridiculous though)

As for paint, I've been debating between a light citrus green or a light lavender. Or maybe neither. I stand in front of the paint chips and paint selection paralysis sets in. My eyes glaze over and my brain shuts down!

I also meant to add I am totally open to suggestions for window treatments (blinds, bamboo shades, curtains??) As you can see I have a lot of windows in here and my neighbors can see right in!

And would it look ridiculous to paint the fireplace some totally wild color?

How old are your kids? And how do you want to use this room? BTW, love the sofa and your room!

Very nice room! The sofa and coffee table are a great start.

Are you getting 2 new chairs? I like the chair you have chosen but I'm not sure I would do another tufted piece. For windows, I think bamboo shades, roman shades or panels would be pretty. I'm partial to panels and they will accentuate the height of the room. Next is to get a fabulous piece of artwork or mirror for above the mantle. Don't forget lamps! The room needs some pattern. You can bring that in with the rug or window treatments. It's going to look great once it's done!

Pick the paint color last after you have made your other choices.

My stepson is 7. I have a boy bun in the oven and we will add one more kid to the mix in the next couple of years. I assume a boy! lol

This is our living room. Weh don't own a TV so I don't have to work around that. It will be for sitting around, reading, etc. We do try to keep all toys upstairs.

I had only planned to get one chair for the room to put by the clock. Along the other wall I wanted to put a long skinny table with some fantastic lamps. I had visions of a craigslist find painted a very vibrant color.

    Here is another chair option.

I can find many chairs that I LOVE but they are all $500 plus and with young children it seems silly to spend that much right now. It still has the tufting I know, but it's a different look and it's purple!

I would start by getting a patterned rug picking up the blue of the sofa. I think the white rug on top of the beige carpet will look washed out and there won't be enough contrast. Once you pick out a rug you can pull colors from that for the walls, accent chair and window treatment . You don't have enough room on the sides of the windows flanking the fireplace for panels so I would do roman shades on all the windows, maybe in a print that coordinates with the rug.

I would go to houzz.com and look at living rooms for ideas of what colors, style, fireplaces, furniture layouts, etc. I think your job will be much easier once you have an inspiration to take you in a specific direction.

My problem is too many inspirations! lol I've been pinning stuff since January.

My second choice for a rug is a black/white cow hide rug. The carpet won't be there forever. It was cheaper to have the builder put in carpet than hardwood so that's what we did. They wanted $12K for hardwood! No thanks! Hubby can install it. :)

Maybe I should make a mood board of what I am thinking.

Typically if you start flipping through all your inspirations, you will find common and repeating themes...

Or perhaps you should find a piece of art that you like for over the fireplace from which you can pull colors for the room...

If little boys are in your future and present, I would look at outdoor fabric or leather, a patterned rug, washable paint finish. Also, you may consider replacing the table with an ottoman if the glass edge is sharp.

Just my opinion...but I think a cow hide rug is too casual for your space...maybe more for a family/tv room. I love your blue sofa...it is a very pretty space with wonderful naturual light.

What Annie suggested...go back over your pinterest and you will probably see some common threads.

I would pick out a piece of art work for above the fireplace that has some of the blue from the sofa, then pick a wall colour from it as well. I don't think the cow hide rug would match the room. If you are really set on one, could you work it into your bedroom?

I just saw a cowhide rug at Joss and Main supposedly less than half price at 223.00. It's about 4'6"x6'6"
