Drapery panel question

I know how the length works, but I have a dumb question about the width. Panels only come in certain sizes. I have two side by side windows I have to dress. They are both 48 by 48. The space between the windows is 7 1/4 " so about 103 1/4" width in total. Floor to ceiling is 91".

If for instance, silk panels only come in 42" widths, is that just for a non-working drape? What if you want to have working drapes that fully close? Do you just have to have them custom sewn or do you buy several separate panels? Buying several panels doesn't make sense but I can't find anything on the internet to answer my question.

I found some really nice woven shades, and I want to get some silk drapes too.

Hi, 42" is not a lot when smooshed together in pleats (experiment with something you have to see what I mean) and so they're probably just meant - if you use one alone on either side of a window, to be nonworking. If you want one large piece that closes and also covers both windows at once, you might need to go the 'custom' route, but that's not a big deal really, done every day (more so than other products that you order as 'custom'), because no one's house (or windows) are exactly alike even if widths of single windows are 'standards'. You could possibly use 4 panels - two for each window - rather than two great big ones, if you don't need 'working' ones though. Or else buy a lot of separates and sew them together (not sure why you say it doesn't make sense).

So far I've only seen one website that says "state your panel size". And what I've come up with is I need 2 panels 2 1/2 widths a piece. Not all of them offer different width sizes. Maybe if I put something in a basket it would ask me. I haven't gone that far.

So if they don't offer that and I need more drape, does everyone just take it to their designer or sew it together themselves?

You can purchase silk drapes in wide widths than 42" I have a set that is 70" wide per panel. My window width is 135".

The space between the windows is 7 1/4 " so about 103 1/4" width in total.

You'll want to add overlap allowance to that 103.25" measurement. That will let you overlap the panels on the wall (e.g. the cover part of the walls past the window edges... otherwise they just hang so that they cover the window proper).

I usually overlap at least 12", more for heavier fabrics, so that I can open the panels to fully clear the window.

You can buy doule-width panels @ 96". You could also just double/triple the number of panels, so 2/3 hanging per side instead of one.

Google "double wide silk panel" and you'll find that lots of stores offer double wide options.
