PERFECT!!! I just got a brilliant idea from you to mosaic around the bases of the light fixtures in my art room!!! Or how about mosaicing that wood trim that goes around the wall at the ceiling? ooohhh, the possibilities!!!

Voice of caution here . . . .just be careful of the extra weight.

Tesserae falling off of a wall is bad enough, falling off a ceiling could seriously injure or worse. Not to mention the added weight on the ceiling material itself.

Just being cautious.

Great idea, I dont think my ceilings could handle it but some of them older houses probably could!!! It would be awesome though!!!

If I started down that road I think I'd be looking for some new digs. My DH is extremely supportive of my art,
but if I started messing with the actual home structures
I'd have some splanin' to do.

LOL @ Linlee. My husband just shrugs when he FINALLY notices I have done another piece of furniture like today and the trunk. After him being home a half hour sitting 6 foot from the trunk I finally had to point it out to him I did mosaic on it. tomorrow it gets grouted.

He put his foot down when I wanted to do the bathroom counter like Slow's. DANG!!! So I painted it white. Either way it will have to be replaced someday.

Believe me I have looked at walls considering what it would be like if I never had to be concerned with resale someday.

what if I do them on mesh (and can hide them) until I thenset them up. Do you think the mesh will make them stick out too much? how thick is it?

oh wait! maybe I design it on paper and glue it upside down on that then soak the paper off after I install it...
I bet if I use weldbond instead of thinset it will NEVER fall down!!!

The mesh is thin...would hardly make a difference.

I'm thinking styrofoam mosaiced and caulked to the ceiling, that is what those things around the light fixtures are nowa days....(Where yu goin'...NOWHERE!!!)

the thing I've always wanted to do to a ceiling is,
in the kitchen...I have visualized this for nearly all of the 26 years I"ve been in this house..
to attach lattice panels all along the kitchen ceiling..they would be painted either a natural brown, stained and preserved or a mint green or a creamy peach color..
then in the corners of the lattice, to hang the rubber clusters of grapes you can find at Michael's craft store..
all around the entire kitchen..
the lattice would be dropped a few inches from the actual ceiling, so it would have a suspended look, and the grapes would just drape, as if growing from a grape arbor..
that's what I want...

I think I would be afraid of the drywall bowing from the weight of the tile and grout.

But wait - are you thinking of just doing a small bit of the ceiling, versus the entire room?

Jane- I love the styrofoam idea. You could get some really great textures that way!!!

NT- If you do this definetly do it in the reverse method!!! Weather ( I know its the wrong spelling but I cant remember how to spell the other one!!!) you do it on mesh or the double reverse on paper it would be so great. I have popcorn (yes I know thats so oldschool!!) ceilings and know mine couldnt handle it!!

I think it would be a great idea to do in small areas!!!

Seaglassic- I have this picture in my head of how your kitchen would be based on how you described it and I sure hope you have really tall ceilings!!! As Im thinking you would have the taller people in the home hitting them grapes hanging down all the time!!!!

they're all 8 ft. ceilings and the kitchen light fixture hangs about a good two and a half ft down, from the ceiling.
I don't like that light fixture and will one day replace it.
..I want a kind that is a curved metal rod, with 5 high intensity lights along it, in a nice curved wave.
it's close to the ceiling and there's no wasted space on a dumb 6 light thing, that's so common in nearly every kitchen I've ever seen.

the grapes wouldn't be the really long kind..just short clusters and they would be way out of reach except for some professional basketball players...
which aren't very likely to be stepping foot in my kitchen anytime soon....lol
I used to have the popcorn in the ceiling in the front room...we scraped it all off and repainted it a plain white.
one day that room should be painted with a sky blue ceiling with clouds around it.
and then a ceiling fan for the summer nights...
too many ideas and too little help.
it's never going to get done but at least that's what I would like to happen.

I'd up the anty to stained glass grapes with copper wire stems/vines and leaves...I LIKE my popcorn ceiling! I think it was put on 2x as thick as normal, it's reeeaaal fluffy! Like clouds!lol! Hmmm, dining room light fixture could use some bling too! Oh Sheesh, is this after I mosaic my kitchen backsplash????!!!

NT - I wouldn't go there - in the case of a leaky roof - the Weldbond won't hold - too dangerous.
