Depends on the lighting in your room. The BM samples will not give you the same effect as the actual paint finish that you pick out. It took us painting a whole room of Shaker Beige facing South to just say Ugh, we made a really bad mistake in a color choice.

My mother is considering the same color. It looks like it's on the brownish side to me. I just ordered one of the bigger samples from BM hoping we can tell more about it. Of course, sometimes that's still not enough and you do have to paint a larger area to get a feel for what it really looks like.

I painted swatches of this color and of Hot Spring Stones in my foyer a few months ago. It looked brown to me. Yummy color but too dark for my tiny space.

We just painted the outside of our house this color. Came out much lighter than we thought. Has a putty undertone in some lighting, Not a warm color. We hade tried Shaker Beige first and it looked to yellow. Worth buying sample and try small area to see during day and night.

Hmmm the real Pismo dunes are fairly light tan sand....

After looking at a bunch of images of BM Pismo Dunes via Google, I think the answer to your "Gray or Brown" question is "yes." Not very useful, but it very much depends on the light, and it sounds like it is fickle from one wall to another in your space. My guess is that if you want something more solidly in the "brown" camp, you are going to have to find something a bit less muted.

A quick search suggested BM Alexandria Beige, Elk, Palm Desert Tan, Morrel, Coriander Seed, Beigewood, and Broken Arrow. They don't look like they skew as yellow as the Lenox Tan, but are a bit more decisively brown than the Pismo Dunes.
