Dining area help please?

I fell in love with this chandelier, but I'm thinking the mirrors don't work well with it now. I am planning to also change the artwork on the wall. Any advice? I am wanting to add a more contemporary look to my space but am lacking in decorating abilities. This room is off my living area, which I am also trying to decorate, so I may need to add a picture of what I have for that room as well. I will have questions on that room as well. The wall color will probably be changed to a different color (maybe greige or a darker color than what is there currently).

I love the mirrors, and your chairs. Possibly you just need a few embellishments as in a center piece or statement piece on the credenza? The right rug could add some needed color.

I really like the mirrors and your furniture too. I would add a row of B&W prints with black frames along the wall where the current artwork is to add a more contemporary feel. I had a room with similar colors in my last house and it worked really well with the soft tan/yellow walls and the dark wood floor.

The light fixture seems too small for the table. Or maybe it is just too high. I really like the mirrors.

Thanks, arcy and cheryleb. I am terrible with choosing embellishments. I find things I love but then have trouble putting it altogether. B&W prints with black frames sound good too. I had planned to add those in my living area as well. Just so you can see that area that will tie in with this dining area, it may help to show you where I am going in that space. Ignore the large leather ottoman that is in the corner of the pic, as it is leaving.

Here's the fireplace wall so you can see the rest of that area off the dining area. Again, ignore the leather ottoman.

Rob, the chandy could be a little too high. It's about 33 inches above the table, and I think the standard is about 30. When we hung it, it just seemed like a little more room may be good if we put a vase of flowers or something on the table.

Your home is lovely. My first thought, too, was that the chandelier may be a little small for your table/space, but it also kind of blends into the walls in the photo. So maybe if you darken the walls it will have more presence. I like the mirrors, too. I wonder if you moved the credenza over under the art, if they might not look more cohesive? I think the mirrors can stand alone on that wall.

I wouldn't do any other changes to art until you paint the room. What might look good with it now, might not look as good with the new paint. With new paint, you may like the look of what you already have.

Thank you, olychick. I think once I change the wall color, the chandy will stand out more and hopefully look fine. Your suggestion that I refrain from buying more wall art until I paint is a good idea. I agree. As for moving the credenza to the other wall, I wish I could but there isn't enough room.

I really like the mirrors with your chandelier - agree with the others that you should get the wall color up before making any decisions about the art. If you want to go more contemporary, I think you could achieve that with different art. The painting your have over your fireplace looks more contemporary than the painting you currently have in your dining room - so maybe you could just hang it in your dining room temporarily to see how that changes the vibe. Your house is beautiful!

Thanks, MarinaGal. I am definitely fine with replacing the artwork in my dining room and will figure out what color to paint my walls before I do anymore decorating. As much as I have liked the light color, I think a little darker color would look nice and give me the look I'm going for. Between the chandy and the light window treatments in the living area, a light colored wall seems a little drab.

I think the chandy is pretty, but in the pic, it looks not only too high, but off center...perhaps it's just the angle in the photo. But the other thing is, FWIW, (and I know you didn't ask) the table looks too small. I love the table, love the chairs, individually, but it looks like they are out of scale with each other.

Even though I may not have asked, I appreciate your thoughts. That's why I'm here. :)

It must be the picture, because it's a small area. If the table was bigger, we would not have room to pull out the chairs without hitting the wall. When you say the chandy looks off center, do you mean it looks off center from the table? And you think the chairs are too big for the table? I never thought of that. I bought them altogether as a set.

What a nice house you have! I personally think that the chairs and chandy (which looks small to me too) are kind of glam and then the mirror and picture are more casual.

so not to beat a dead horse (what a terrible expression that is now that i see it in writing! gah!)...

but look at what a difference keeping all your pieces exactly the same but just changing the paint color.

one thing that was bothering me was the white framed mirrors on such a light wall color, but i love them on a darker wall.

Annie, upon viewing the pic again, I think you may be right about the light (or table being off center). I need to move the table under it a little more.

tryingtodecorate, thank you for your opinion. You may be right about that.

maggie, I agree totally about the light colored mirrors on the light walls not working. The grey colored paint makes a huge difference I think. In fact, I was wondering if a color like that would work in my dining and living area. Thank you so much for doing that mockup for me.

I love the look of the darker walls - Makes everything pop! However, I would consider lowering the chandy - just a smidge

Another vote to shift the table/chairs slightly -- so that the set sits under the chandelier. You may need to play with this -- even mere inches can count! :)

Another vote for the darker color on the walls ...

Add a pair of tall thin glass-and-metal buffet lamps to the top of the buffet. Keep their lines simple and strong. Always nice to have lighting options! :) And the light will be reflected in the mirrors ...

Yes -- IF possible lower the chandelier slightly. Or -- add a round plain modern glass vase to the table itself -- to tie it to the chandelier .... check shops like Crate & Barrel for ideas ....

Consider removing the artwork. Take another photo of the room -- just for a visual comparison. Look for a very neutral-toned artwork -- maybe an unframed one ... perhaps a long rectangular-shaped artwork ...

Another option might be to add a couple of thick dark-wood modern shelves to the wall instead of the artwork ... then add some photos leaning against the wall ...

Here is a link that might be useful: bellacor -- possible example of buffet lamp

    Before and After

With the chandelier larger and lower.

Is there a reason the chandelier isn't centered over the table?

I think you have a lovely start for a wonderful dining room. To be honest, I guess I'm against the majority, because I'm just not liking the mirrors and picture with your table and chandelier. I do agree that a deeper color will definiltely add to the room and set off the chandelier. I think I would try removing everything from the walls and then start with a piece you love....a different, modern piece of artwork, personal pictures framed, etc and then see if a paint color can be pulled from that to pull it all together :)

Thank you for all your help! I really appreciate your honest opinions.

Janice, I will lower the chandy by this weekend. It probably is a little too high.

teacats, I have moved the table over where it should be and have removed the artwork. I really like the buffet lamps you suggested and will try to include a pic of them in my next post later in the week. I had wanted to add some buffet lamps anyway. I will also look into a glass vase and some modern artwork for the wall and possibly some shelves.

beverly, I wish I could get a larger chandy in that particular style. Your mockup looks really nice. However, I think I will try to make do with this one and hope that lowering it makes a difference.

mommy, thank you. I agree that the artwork and mirrors arenâÂÂt the best idea. I actually had them before I fell in love and bought the chandy and thought they may have to go. I was given the artwork anyway, so IâÂÂm okay with taking it down. The mirrors could probably be used in another part of my home.

If anyone has a suggestion for a different type of mirror in place of the ones I have there now, please let me know. Since there are no windows right there in the dining area, I thought mirrors over the buffet would be good to reflect the light on the opposite wall of the living area.
