desktop protector?

I am in the process of painting my DD's new desk (CL find) and I would like to find a plastic desktop protector for it. My son has one for his desk, which came from Levenger catalog, but they don't seem to carry them any more. Pottery Barn has one but it is almost $200! I don't want to pay that much. Has anyone seen anything like this for a reasonable price? If I can't find the plastic type, I may just get a piece of glass cut to fit the desktop.

This is one of those things that I wish I had done before we had moved in. Now our desk top has scratches and even some dents from things that have fallen off the bookshelf onto the desk.

Sorry to hijack but I have a couple questions for you Patricia. Is your glass shatter-proof? How thick is it? And did you have to have holes drilled into the glass for cords, etc.?

    Thanks very much!

You can get a sheet of plexiglass cut to size for you at Lowe's for a reasonable price. They have different thicknesses to suit your needs.

Pottery Barn says theirs is acrylic. Instead of glass, you could also have a piece of plexi-glass cut. It would be much lighter weight, but depending on how it was treated it could scratch, although glass can, too.

I don't know if my glass is shatter proof. It's pretty thick. I don't have young children so that was not a concern to me. I don't have holes drilled in the top, but then my desk is not set up that way so that I would need them. My desk is one of those picnic or sawhorse looking things but with a solid wood top. I "think" (I remember looking at several places including Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and several others) it came from Pottery Barn. I had to have one of those "thingies" that holds the hard drive because I think these desks were made for lap tops and sort of conference table but I have always liked my keyboard near my monitor. My arms are sort of contorted like and I don't like my keyboard lower. No, my arms are not really contorted but I am double-jointed and having the keyboard at the same level as the flat monitor works better for me.

If you have a Hobby Lobby around watch their ads for glass on sale about once every month or so. I had one for our coffee table. Our daughter took the table, but we kept the glass here for fear of breaking in her move from midwest to Cali.
It's very thick and measures 27 by 52 if I remember right. I've had it for quite some time so I'm sure the prices have gone up but I paid around thirty for it on sale. It's now the desk top setting on two wood file cabinets.

I had glass cut for DH's executive type of desk. The wood is stained med-dark and the shop suggested an amber tinted glass. It looks great, less glare and no greenish edges. I would've never thought of that but if that stuff really matters to you it looks great tinted. You don't see any color, it just matches.

I have a piece of glass. Actually it is the sliding glass door from a 50's era china cabinet I have. didn't like the glass on the cabinet, but it was a good size for the desk. Doesn't cover the whole top, but fits like a desk blotter would. I put a pretty piece of fabric under the glass.

I bought mine at an office supply store. Plastic, but perfect for my daughter. She can curl it up and put ribbons from her sports under it, or pictures and it was very inexpensive. Hope that helps.

Bought mine at a local plastic store. Hard Acrylic board. 1/8 inch think. clear. Paid 47 dollars for it. 52" x 23". They smoothed the edges for me, too. Pottery Barns charges 149 + tax for it.

What is a “local plastic store” if I may ask?
