my sectional is here!

My Flexsteel sectional (Jennings model) has been delivered and I LOVE it! New furniture is such a humongous splurge for us that I've been all a-twitter for weeks that it'd work space-, proportion-, and appearance-wise, but it couldn't fit better if it had been custom made for the space available. It's very comfortable but I wouldn't recommend it for very tall people as the seat depth is quite shallow - although it's awfully nice to be able to sit on a couch with my back against the cushions and my danged feet ON the floor for once!

My living room is small so it's almost impossible to get a decent picture of it, but here's the best I could get. The color isn't showing well in pictures but it's a warm sage green that matches the rug perfectly. The little pinkish square on the pillow is a swatch for the curtains DH picked out which I'll probably get myself for Yule, so ignore that. :-) I know I need to fix the artwork situation, I think we'll do something with that next week. The small maple table and floor lamp are going elsewhere once I have replacements (I've actually never liked them that much but they did the job they needed to do for little cash). Paint will happen once we've fixed the horrible "texturing" mess the PO made of the walls and I don't yet know what color it'll be - the room will tell me what it wants when the time comes around.

DH wants a new coffee table as this one's a bit small functionally (needs to be about 6" longer and wider), and he's really got a bee in his bonnet about getting something with some kind of storage.

Yes, that's my dog's butt in the lower left. :-)

That is a great looking sofa--and it goes perfectly with the rug. It really does look incredibly comfortable. Congratulations!

It's perfect for your space! Very similar in size to one I was looking at-- so yes, I know how hard it is to find a sectional with that profile!

Yikes, I am not sure I'd go longer on the coffee table-- wider would be good.

I think that little table would be just darling painted-- not for this room but maybe for elsewhere.

    Those curtains will be great.

Congrats! I know it is hard to buy new furniture-- the cost and the stress. You did good-- and flexsteel will last you a long time.

I love it! I had a sofa along the same color. I loved it. So much goes with it! One small tweak...rest the legs of the couch on the rug. You did good! You will get a lot of enjoyment! Go put your feet up!

Love the couch! What about something like this for the coffee table. We got this one at Overstock - it doesn't have storage - but they have others that do.

Very nice! I'm not leggy either and really appreciate finding furniture that allows me to sit and relax comfortably.

Love the rug, too. Wish we could see more of your pup...
    Enjoy!

    Oooo, very, very pretty.

Love the sectional and glad you posted. I also need a couch with a small footprint for a not so large room. I've had a Flexsteel couch and loveseat that we bought it 1979. Went through 3 kids and when they left had it reupholstered and is currently in our basement room. It's always been comfy. We are both short anc couches now days are so large. I too, want my feet to touch the floor again!

I would think about a couple of ottoman cubes that have storage in them, and would allow feet up when desired. Also makes for additional seating if needed, but more flexible than one large ottoman might be. Maybe something like this?

    Very pretty couch!

Nice style and size. Very pretty with the rug. Congrats

Thanks all! It was tricky work finding a sectional that was not only small enough (without being basically two loveseats stuck together, which would have been too small for us both to stretch out - this one is something in the area of 85x110-ish) but that would not clash terribly with our mixture of late Victorian and Arts & Crafts pieces. Flexsteel got a lot of comments on the Furniture forum as being a good "bang for your buck" if you didn't have a bucketload of money to spend so I'm glad they had a style that worked for us.

We've done the ottoman-as-coffee-table thing before and while I can appreciate them in other people's houses it just doesn't function all that well for us. (Trunks are categorically out too, perhaps even more so. Things just get dumped in and it becomes a huge mess, and they're death on unshod toes!) DH's thought process, which I think is a pretty good one the more I chew on it, seems to be a combination of a shelf for the laptops when not in use and drawers for the camera/phone/ipod cables, gaming gear, pens/notepads, tissues, and all that kind of stuff.

funkyart, the coffee table does need to be longer so that it can be comfortably reached from both ends of the sectional - we both like to use our laptops and eat our meals at the coffee table, and at its current length if I have the end of the table pulled comfortably down to "my" end (the right side) DH has to sit in the middle of "his" side, and if he has it pulled down so that it's comfortable from his end I can hardly reach it at all. We taped cardboard to the top to figure out a size that worked better, and 30x48 ended up being pretty much perfect.

kmcg85, the rug is almost perfectly centered in the main floorspace, the rectangle that doesn't include the bay window - it's a fairly big rug for a small room, those floors are DANG cold in the winter - and it looks weird pulled off center. The room is too small to "float" furniture without interfering with traffic flow (the door from the hallway is literally inches from the lamp on the right side and the door to the kitchen is about a foot and a half from the couch's left arm). The legs are all sitting on rubber-backed wooden "pucks" both to minimize denting the pine floors, to keep the couch from shifting at all (even with the weight of it and the clamp that holds it together it did shift on the wood), and to raise the whole thing just enough to slide the very ugly black UPS (computer power gadget) underneath and out of sight. So there IS a method to my madness ;-) and I can live with the skirt being off the floor a bit.

amck, here's the best picture I have of fluff-face (who LOVES the couch, and yes he's allowed on it because we like to cuddle):

Fabulous, you have to be so darned excited, I'm just loving how it fits that corner and how it looks with the rug, perfect! Yes, one of those leather ottomans might be the answer and then you could put your feet up too. Art, paint, lamps, side tables..... they will all come as you can do it. That Flexsteel should last you a really long time, it is a very good quality piece of furniture, I've had it before and I never had a problem, the type of springs they use. Keep us posted!

Using the coffee table for eating or laptop use isn't very comfortable or good ergonomically. What about getting a couple of these, which can be folded flat when not needed, are height adjustable, and pull up under the couch so that you can sit comfortably?

Then you can get a smaller coffeetable or an ottoman for using as a foot rest (and potential extra seating and storage).

Otherwise, here is one site with coffee tables that should meet your dimension requirements.

I have to admit, I was a little hesitant to open the post, as I normally am not a fan of the look of sectionals at all. But I have to say, *that* is what a sectional should look like! It's both beautiful and cozy looking. Well done.

Well, I have to say that's the nicest sectional I ever saw.
I am not a fan of sectionals, but that one I could live with, it's lovely both the style and the way it
fits into the room. It's stylish and functional.

Funny thing, I pictured me horizontally on one side, Cliff on the other side, and our
hound in the middle. :) zzzzzzz and the tv blasting...Honestly, I actually stared at your
sectional and got that metal picture. :)

Perfect choice, enjoy it in good health.

Excellent and lovely choice, jonmari: when I'm by myself, I love to position myself in the corner of the sectional, and stretch out.

Love your new sectional. It looks so comfy. We have a great sectional in our home theater room and I told my husband it should have come with a warning on it.....that you can't sit on it without falling asleep! :) It is so comfortable!

So happy you found the perfect piece for your room. I love it when that happens.

    Great sectional Mari.

We had one like that in our old house. It had one extra piece that was a chaise and also used our coffee table to eat on among various other tasks.

I ended up buying a 38" square with lots of storage space. We could both eat on it comfortably, he from his side as well as me from mine.

Oooh...chocolate brown, & it looks so cozy, so comfy...can I come over? Love the more diminuitive scale. It doesn't look clunky or boxy like so many sectionals do.

Your little dog is so cute! You all have the perfect place to cuddle now! Enjoy!

It looks so cozy and comfortable and I love the clean lines!

Sorry, just realized it's sage green! A very rich, warm shade of sage evidently, as it appeared to be chocolate! I went back for another look & to read more carefully. I saw it, I liked it, I posted...too hastily! Whatever color it is I love it!

Mari -- fantastic choice -- the new sectional looks wonderful and cozy!! Just fills the corner nicely ..... can't wait to see the artworks on the walls too!

I'm sure most of you would consider us barbarians :-) but we'll be putting feet on our coffee table no matter what. An ottoman is just not going to happen - we have Been There And Done That and it did not work for us at all.

We have a closet crammed with artwork - DH's mother was an artist and collected a ton of random stuff, as have we - so we just have to dig through and see what we like for this corner, maybe move things from other rooms. DH is taking some "mental health days" from work this week so I ought to be able to get his help.

Les, I was just looking at that coffee table site last night! We're probably complete losers but we got rid of a similar set of tray tables two moves ago because they never got put away (since it'd just be taken back out shortly) and then the ugly thing is just sitting there all the time.

As a general rule I am not dancing-around thrilled with the look of sectionals either although they can be very efficient, but a couch and loveseat wasted enough space in this small room that it was pretty much the only way to go for sensible use of the room. It took me a while to find this one. The use Joann describes is exactly what we bought it for - DH stretched out on the longer side of the L, me stretched out on the shorter side, dog or future cat curled up in the corner! In fact, we really amused the saleslady by lying down on it in the store to make sure we'd both fit properly on it.

Mitch, I'm in exactly that position right now - snuggled in the corner in a nest of pillows with my computer on a lapdesk. Yum.

Mari, we are also barbarians where our great room is concerned.

I brought up a large square table for your space, previosly, and just saw one in context this morning. It was from a post on leather furniture and the pic belongs to karezz.

We use ours for eating, plopping our feet on and hiding newspapers, etc. in the storage areas.

What Reno fan said. Very nice.

I like it a lot. I love the style and color, and it looks very comfortable. I always look for not very deep furniture since I'm not very tall.

That's my coffee table as well...it's a Basset. Those drawers that look like 2 are actually 1 larger drawer. I keep all my beading supplies in it as well as 2 very nice and fluffy throws for when it gets chilly.

I'm not sure that this coffee table from Brookstone has the correct dimensions for your BEAUTIFUL new sectional, but this has a top that comes up so you can use it for your laptops or for eating and it has storage (accessible through doors on both sides of the table). It comes in 3 finishes.

Mari - I love your new sofa; the arms are so pretty and it just looks like it fits perfectly!
I'm so glad your new house is coming together.

Beeeeyoutiful Mari!! I am so pleased for you! You'll probably have to scrunch up on your side so that the furry ones can have more space :^)
