Desperate bedroom help!

Hello!! My room is just a train wreck. I've spent so much time on other rooms...that mine has gotten completely neglected. It's just me (divorced..3 kids), so I'd like to make this a very 'me' spot. I need to work with the paint...any ideas? I know I have way too many prints...I've thrown a mishmash of things together over the past few years. Ugh!!! any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated!

I looks pretty nice to me, what don't you like about it?

If I were doing over the room for my own tastes, I would choose something other than a brown/green theme, especially removing the brown and going with a more feminine color to highlight the elegant bed. But no matter what I changed it to, I would keep that pretty footstool.

I also was expecting something horrendous. Your bed is very pretty and I think the brown wall really sets it off. I had green in my master that took on that same shade...mint chocolate chip I called it. Great in the daylight, at night not so much. But I think you can work with it...just a cursory search on Overstock found these - all under $50! You might prefer a print, but maybe save that for window coverings and pillows?

I certainly wouldn't call your bedroom a train wreck. It looks quite lovely to me. One issue for me is that having the bedding the exact same color (or very close) as the wall color sort of loses the bed into the wall. You have a really lovely bed frame, so I would suggest considering some other bedding alternatives that might help it stand out a little more or perhaps painting the wall a different color. You mentioned that you think you have "too many prints", but I only see two: the ottoman and the small pillows on the bed. As I understand, multiple prints are fine, but it is suggested that they differ in scale. So if you feel like the prints are competing, perhaps you need a larger print for accent bedding so that it doesn't compete with the ottoman. While it doesn't really bother me in the picture, but it sounds like it might be bothering you. In fact, I might even suggest a large print duvet cover to really make the bed stand out. But maybe I just like a bold print for bedding.

Overall, what do you like about your room? That might help us offer more suggestions. Do you love the colors? Do you love the bed spread? Do you like the simple/soothing bedding? Do you love your bed frame or side tables?

I would start by trying to figure out what you like (if you don't already know). Look through magazines, online decorating blogs, the Gallery on this website (will post the link below). Do you want soft colors? Something more feminine since it is YOUR room to do what you want? Do you prefer brighter, more energizing colors? Is there a style you like? Traditional? Shabby Chic? Modern? The first thing I did after my divorce was to create a more feminine room. I don't mean all frilly and foo foo, but it probably is something my ex-husband wouldn't have been crazy about.

You have a great start and a lot of good elements to work with. Great bed. Love the footstool. Nightstands and lamp are cute. I think you need:

Different window treatments for sure. Something more feminine. Faux silk maybe. You could buy larger rod/hardware at Bed Bath, Lowes, just about anywhere. Small investment, BIG impact.

Sorry, but I am just not a fan of the two-tone walls (especially in the current colors), unless you are really going for a modern, geometric, bold look. It definitely does not scream soothing/calming/oasis/retreat, etc.

New bedding (or even a new coverlet or duvet cover). I can't really suggest a color because I would decide on paint colors before I purchased anything. Your taste looks feminine, but your current bedding does not (except for the yellow pillows. ) Try TJ, HomeGoods, Tuesday Morning for bedding sets that won't break the bank.

Be sure and post progress pics:)

I used Benjamin Moore "crystalline" in a room and I'm really happy with the color. It's a very soothing color and I think it would look nice with your furniture and accent pieces. It was a Pottery Barn color. I'll see if I can find a photo in one of their ads.

Thanks to everyone!! I so appreciate the comments. I am not a fan of the 2 tone walls either...but, for some reason it sounded like a good idea last year. I just can't bring myself to paint. Ugh!!! The window treatments are a work in progress. I have no rod up..I had plain white pleated shades and took them down. One panel hanging is a cotton khaki and I bought a brushed nickel rod. I like the idea of softening the fabric to silk. I can always return them!

I love the ottoman. I guess I look at the prints above the bed, the little green pillows (my attempt in bringing in the green wall) and the large euro shams and I don't like the way they work together. I'm certainly not attached to the brown duvet..and I liked the comment above that the bed frame gets lost. I hadn't thought of that. The adjoining master bath is dark brown and taupe. I just find those colors so soothing, but was afraid to use the same in my bedroom was too much of the same colors. The ottoman is my most favorite piece...would like to build around that. And, I suppose I could suck it up and paint!! But, then I feel like I'm even more confused starting over. Oh dear....I'm stressing myself out!

I think I would find a few inspiration photos to get the creative juices going. I don't know your taste, but here is one as a slightly 'over the top' example:

To me, the photo shows that simple linens can look great on an ornate bed frame. (I'd lose the three little pillows in the middle of the bed.) The colors are very soothing too -- taupe could work just as well as they gray.

lisa have you looked in the gallery? follow the link below to the bedroom inspirations thread, some of the bedrooms are very elaborate but as you look through you might start to get a feel for color combinations that you like.

I also like the above suggestions for new bedding that olychick posted above because they would really break up some of that solid brown in your bedroom. It really depends on whether you want to work with the current wall colors or start afresh.

Beautiful iron bed! I've never had one, but yours is very pretty. You might also look at houzz.com for bedroom ideas. See if you find a common thread on the ones you like. I've found what's soothing to me are lighter colors, but you might see which ones you're really drawn toward.

I also hate painting so sympathize with your desire to avoid it, but it has such a huge impact, and I think at least one of those colors might need to go. If they do, I've found that I have to use tape by the trim (not like the others on here that can paint a straight line by the trim, but I do better along the ceiling). Frog tape--green--really works if you press it down very tightly (better than blue painter's tape, IMHO). That's just in case you need it. :)

Hang in there and you'll get lots of good ideas from the creative souls here.

Okay! I've scrolled through galleries...thank you!! I always lean towards brown, cream, taupe and white. I can't avoid painting. I HAVE to get rid of that green. Now, it's just a matter of whether or not I paint the other walls the same brown...or start all over. That browns been there for about 3 years...so not sure it would match the other walls. And I totally see I need to get rid of the brown duvet cover. It's old anyway...I want my bed to pop. It's 15 years old...but, I still love it. I am so grateful to you all!! Has anyone done all chocolate brown walls? Wondering if it would be too dark. I'm thinking taupe like in my bathroom....or cream. Neutral may be the way to go. That ottoman is really too small for the end of my bed...I just don't have anywhere else to put it. It used to be in the den...love the animal print though.

Your room certainly isn't a train wreck, but you may just want a change. What about buying a new bedding set and hanging a pretty mirror over the bed. That would give you a new look. You could also accent it with pretty colored placemats on the nightstand. Depending on what you purchased for a bedding set, would depend on whether or not you got solid colored or printed placemats. Good luck to you!

lisa- I used to have the same bed in a queen size. My mother gave it to me. I loved it. When I moved out of my college apt, the movers "lost" one of the curved footboards pieces, so I was never able to use it again:(

Good idea to get rid of the green paint. I LOVE animal prints, but I do think they are easier to work into a room if the other elements are somewhat neutral. I would go for neutral walls, sumptuous bedding with a pop of color, and leave the furniture as is. A washed-out cobalt/periwinkle blue color but in a feminine fabric such as silk would look lovely. (Sorry pic is so tiny.)
