Paging Tibbrix

Hi Tibbrix! I have a big favor to ask of you. If I post dining room photos, would you photo shoot a color for me. I've seen you do it for some others, and it really is great for visualizing a color in a room. Thanks so much.

    BM Copper Kettle

I can't do the Everard Gold. The program doesn't have it, and it wouldn't' come out right anyway. Best thing, really, is to pick a few you like and actually take your computer to the paint store to try to find matches.

So glad Holly-Kay has chimed in! They look soooo different on the wall. Something tells methat Copper Kettle would be beautiful in that room.

I don't agree w HK, though. I think a deep, versus dark, color would be glamorous and absolutely perfect in your DR. It'd make your beautiful furniture really stand out and give it the gravitas it demands. Ugh, I sound like someone in a Woody Allen movie.

Tibbrix- can you do Shelburne Buff by BM behind the white cabinet. My sample didn't show up very well next to it.

I can't do Shelburne Buff. It's not in the BM palette on the site. And again, it wouldn't come out like Shelburne Buff at all. It's hard to explain.

Ok just realized that you can't do the BM colors but that's fine. This has helped me sooo much! The grays I thought I wanted- I don't. I'm just drawn to warm fall colors.

Hi hollykay- yes thanks for chiming in. I brought some gold samples home yesterday and the problem is the antique cabinet that appears white. It is actually a creamy yellow color and anything light doesn't play well with it. It leaves me either going white on my walls or very dark. And white isn't for me.

It's not really that. There are BM colors on the program, but only the original numbered colors, not, the HC or AF, etc., colors. Shelburne Buff is an HC color, so it's not on there. But I could try to find a very close match with what is there. The problem is your red wall. It completely changes the color. So again, these programs are not meant to help you find an exact color by name, per se, but rather to help you find the range in which you want to concentrate.

I love that Copper Kettle and hope you'll get a sample and put some swatches of it up on the walls. First thing I'd do, though, if I were you, is paint the walls white. You'll never get a good idea of any color over that red.

Another really nice color, IMO, is BM Coriander Seed

    Coriander Seed

Sis, I'm going to quit for the night. We'll pick it up tomorrow, hopefully with more giving opinions!

    Have a good night.

I love that room you posted! Thanks so much!!!

    Also look at BM Satchel

Ooooh I like the Coriander seed and I love the Copper Kettle color. I love BM Adams Gold too.

Here is a link that might be useful: Adams Gold

I think my two faves are the Coriander Seed and the Satchelâ¦for that room. I think brown is so underrated and underused as a paint color.

Gold is so tough, IMO, because of all the green in it. That's why I'm loving the Lenox Tan, because it actually has a very warm, golden glow to it but w/o the green.

Sis, personally, I wouldn't worry too much about the Powell Buff. They're separate rooms, and so long as you don't go nuts, like going from the Buff to, say, a neon color, I think you can go with any color you want for the DR.

    Hi Tibbrix and hollykay!

While I love Copper Kettle there is not much contrast at all when I put it next to my pine hutch and table. However, because I love the way the Spicy Hue looked I think I'm going to look at some rusts. Looked up Spicy Hue by SW and it is very different on the swatch, but I love the color you posted. Also looking at Ellen Kennon's Rust. I have several greens in my home including her Edgewood Green across the hall from the dining room and rust looks really good with it. I was up until 1:30 looking at all the pics( thank you!), and I kept being drawn to the spicy hue. So at least it gives me a direction.

hollykay- Adams Gold is one of the first golds I looked at along with Shelburne Buff and both again had hardly any contrast nest to my jelly cabinet. Irl the cabinet is a yellowy cream almost with some putty undertones.

Yes! I'm thinking the whole autumn/pumpkin/spice/cinnamon/nutmeg thing would be really stunning in that room with that furniture and the colors you've got in there. The Coriander Seed looks nutmeg-y to me, while the Satchel mades me want to light candles and have a glass of wine. Will you promise me you'll take a serious look at those two, i.e.: getting samples and trying them on the wall? I really think "your" color is one of them or something in that realm.

ooh, oh, ohâ¦here's what I'd do!

BM Satchel on the walls and BM Lenox Tan on the ceiling!

OMG! I'm coming over for dinner!

Open each in separate windows and look at them side-by-side, Sis. Gorgeous! You'll lose friends, though, as they'll all be so jealous of you, so maybe it's not a good idea.

    Houzz pic of BM Satchel

This would be what it would look like, kinda, with Lenox Tan on the ceiling

You are too funny! That is a really good suggestion though. I promise I'm going to get larger samples today! I spend so much time at Benjamin Moore I'm surprised they haven't hired me, except for the fact I'm terrible with colors!

Sis, I have the whole group of EK colors. I will look at the sample of Rust when I get home. How about EK Tuscan Sun? I think that is a lovely color.

Thought I'd give an update. Went to BM store today and brought numerous large samples home to try. Satchel is beautiful but almost the same tone as my hutch. I did find one that is very similar to the picture you posted last Tibbrix. Its called Baked Cumin which is a brownish gold to my eye. Another that I like is Georgian Brick but so far I like Baked Cumin the best. May go back tomorrow because I forgot the Coriander Seed sample.

hollykay-I can't find Tuscan Sun in my small samples. Is it a new color? I've had my samples about 4 yrs. That's one I don't remember ever seeing.

Here is a Houzz pic of a wall with the baked cumin. I don't care for it in this pic, but it could be the lighting in that room and not representative of the color at all. It looks very different than the swatch, after all. I'd get a sample and paint a swatch on each wall.

I did have an idea, though. Put the Baked Cumin (or whatever) on the walls and the Satchel on the ceiling! Even better than the other way around, and so perfect for a dining room. I put the two next to each other in separate windows, and they look great together. The Satchel would bring depth to the Cumin, just as the pine ceilings in my LR work so well with the Lenox Tan, and the Satchel is very similar to my pine ceilings. So yes, I think the Satchel on the ceiling and a warm light brown/tan/gold-without-the-green would be perfect for your LR, with your furnishings and floor, the black, etc.

Also check out BM Davenport Tan, for the walls, but if you go with that, I wouldn't use Satchel on the ceiling - too dark. Instead, leave the ceiling white with the Davenport Tan.

And of course, try the Lenox Tan with the Satchel ceiling, which would be similar to my LR, which is so warm and wonderful, those two colors together, esp. at night in artificial light, or late in the day.

Dvenport Tan, I think a perfect hybrid of contemporary classic:

    BM davenport is lovely!

Yes, I really like the Coriander Seed and the Davenport Tan, or a lighter tan walls/Satchel ceiling combo.

    Zeroing in!

What is the aim of repainting? Do you not like the red, do you not like the dark color in the room, or do you just want a change? If you are aiming to get a bit of a different feel in your rooms then you may consider trying the room in an off white. Your current colors look great, they all flow nicely, and the look terrific with your furniture. A brown, especially when combined with the tan in the kitchen, is going to start getting a bit drab, and then what do you do in the foyer? I really like the changes you made in your master, the airier feel that you accomplished, maybe that has started you on the path to lightening up the rest of the house. I really do not see any of the above color suggestions making a change for the better in the room and in the house as a whole. It may help if you decide what the goal for the room and house is and then start looking at color, not just one room at a time but combined with the rest of the house.

Hi All! I am so appreciative of all of you taking time to post comments.

athomeinva- you make some very valid points. To be honest, it's not that I don't like the red. In fact I have vacillated back and forth as to repaint or not. Sometimes I feel its just outdated.I have made some other paint changes recently. Lightened upstairs bedrooms to Gentle Cream and Woodlawn Blue. Plan to repaint foyer, upstairs landings and halls Feather Down. While I am drawn to lighter colors, white or off white wouldn't go with so much color everywhere else. If you have any color suggestions or think I should keep the red, please don't hesitate to give your opinion. Sometimes when you live with something such as a color, it's hard to be objective when it's your own space.

Feather Down is an off white, isn't it? I actually think that if the foyer goes to an off white then the red in the dining room may work less than it does now.
I had similar issues with my dining room and ended up trying multiple colors, finally settling on Bone White on the walls and linen white on the trim and wainscoting. I too thought that since my other rooms all have color that it may not work, but that has not been the case. My furniture is similar to yours and the rug has helped keep color in the room, I remember that you once had a rug in there and adding one back with lighter walls could be a nice transition from the foyer to the kitchen.

I just think the white is so cold and austere when, IMO, a dining room, esp. one like yours and Sis's (versus, say, contemporary) is a wonderful place for deep, warm colors. The room is, by and large, used for dinner and formal dining, and the deeper warm colors create a wonderful ambience for that: elegant, calming, great for encouraging conversation, etc.

I also disagree that a house has to be relatively monochromatic. Open floor plans, yes, but in fact, having individual rooms allows for creating different moods in each room by the use of paint color. Dining rooms and libraries: warm, cozy, embracing; bedrooms: serene, calming; laundry rooms: bright, cheery, energetic...

Oddly enough, the Bone white, which is really not very white, is much more inviting than the Barn red, svelte sage, and Vintage Charm (a purple) that were each tried on the walls. In my last house the Barn red was lovely and inviting but here it was dark and oppressive. Some rooms are hard to make cozy, the high ceilings and windows on just one wall in my room combined with the fairly short wainscoting increase the difficulty of making a darker color work. And I was not in any way suggesting a monochromatic house, just one that has colors that work together and flow nicely.

This post was edited by athomeinva on Sat, Nov 1, 14 at 17:08

Oh, I LOVE Vintage Charm. And I love your crown moulding.

That's what I meant. With separate rooms, I think you can create whatever you want for that room w/o having to worry if the color is in line with any others.

athomeinva- I am envious of the trim work in your room! And I love your windows too. It's so difficult to know what to do. I can always leave the red and maybe that's what I'll do. Now you have me worrying about the Feather Down for my foyer. It truly is a domino effect isn't it. I just want the rooms to flow and look nice. Another issue is the lack of natural light in our home. Boy does that add to the difficulty. Truly, where I have tried to go with real pale colors, they have really washed out. Even the Gentle Cream in a north facing bedroom really washed out but it's staying!

Hi Tibbrix- My son came home from college this weekend and when I told him I was thinking about painting over the red he said " mom I love the red!" of course it could be my dh put him up to it so as to not have the room repainted, lol. I am going to give this some thought and try to find some red dining rooms for inspiration. I've given up on Houzz for searching. You have to go through 50 pictures to find one that may actually have red walls! I am so thankful for your help and the pictures hoping. Hoping for a lightbulb moment!

It's a nice red. Something got you wanting to make a change, so I think you need to think about that.

If I may butt in where I don't belong for a moment: Your son is in college. Ain't his DR. Decision is yours and DH's only, IMO. My experience, also, is that men are very resistant to change, as a group, esp. about things like this.

At any rate, your son will graduate from college and get his own place/home and then he can paint his DR red!

Lol. I say, OWN your own house! Lol.

Sis, I love your house just as it is but if you really do want a change then just make sure you know what your goal is. My house is surrounded by very tall trees and the shutters really reduce light so I know how much trickier it is to find paint colors that work.

You both are right! I need to just think about this before I do anything. And truly maybe there are some other things I can do in the room before changing the color.

Well, I'm pulling for either the Coriander Seed (first choice) or the Davenport Tan. Dining in earthy colors is great, IMO.

I do love the red that you have. I honestly don't think brown is a color I would pull for. I love Tib's room that she did in Lenox Tan but I really don't think I would go darker than that. I love a rich chocolate brown but I wouldn't paint a wall brown. The Coriander seed is lighter so not as oppressive as a dark brown.

I love the Bone White in Athome's dining room but I am more drawn to lighter colors. Our home is surrounded by trees on every side. We painted our living room Jersey Cream. I love it but then we finally had our doors stained and top coated and the dark brown stain really made this room too dark for my liking, I want to paint all the trim white but DH won't even consider it

I just really like your blacksmith sign - and your colonial dining room. Looks a great place for family to come together. Where can I find a sign like that?

HK, My Lenox Tan t night, with the sconces dimmed and the LR lighting I have, looks JUST like the Coriander Seed, and it is luscious. It would be so perfect for nighttime dining. Really. I was thinking about that last night, in fact, and wishing I could have Sis come over and see it, or at least capture it in a pic for her.

musicteacher- I bought my sign at Ethan Allen. However my sister purchased hers off of EBay under Charles Jerrod's signs and paid much less for the same sign. If you have trouble finding it on eBay, let me know and I can ask her about it. Glad you like it. I do too!

hollykay and Tibbrix- went back into BM store yesterday and had the lady there help me with selecting a paint sample. Took in pics of my room, a sample of my pine, and paint swatches of the Powell Buff and Hampshire Gray. She suggested Georgian Brick, also a historic color in their line. It is more of a rusty or orangey red. I actually like it a lot and think it flows better than the red I have now. The browns and the Coriander Seed( which I found in my affinity fandeck) honestly did nothing for the room even though they are beautiful colors. Actually I'm entertaining putting the Coriander Seed in a small powder room that has beadboard. I think it would be so pretty in there!

My plan is getting a pint sample of the Georgian Brick and painting a large poster board to better see how it works throughout the day. Will keep you posted. And then of course there is the issue of what to do about a rug. Heavens forbid!

I like the Georgian brick, it's a nice compromise between red and brown.

Buying a rug will be the fun part!

I love it. It's very earthy, like a terra cotta, and the colors in your DR will be gorgeous with it, IMO. Pic from house of Georgian Brick. So excited for you. I think it's a wonderful change. I do think red DRs are on the back burner now. can't wait to see the final product! Be sure to post an update thread when it's done!

It's actually a lot like the Spicy Hue! Love the autumnal warm spicy colors. I'm excited for you, Sis.

Thank you guys for the encouragement ! It reminded me of the Spicy Hue too which I liked. And y'all know I'll need help picking a rug if I decide to get one!

I love your dining room! I also love your pine hutch. I would definitely choose a color that makes it stand out and not blend in. I love contrast.

    Keep us posted!

aktillery- Thank you! What do you think about the Georgian Brick by Benjamin Moore?

Thought I would give an update on the dining room for Tibbrix and all the people who weighed in. After buying numerous pints of paint and painting large poster boards which I moved around day and night, I came to a realization: I like what I have. I guess it really helped me to see that by trying the others. I also want to say that my red which is a full spectrum color from Ellen Kennon truly makes a difference. The other reds went dull compared to my Berry Red. Thanks again especially to Tibbrix who helped me with her photo shots. That was so helpful!!

Sis, while change is often nice, I think that, as reds go, the red in your dining room is gorgeous, and it also goes incredibly well with your decor. In fact, it's such a nice red that, had you wanted to change your DR TO a red, that red would have been a great choice!

    Glad you've made your decision.

Reading through this for the first time, glad to hear you kept the original red. It has such depth compared to the alternatives above. Makes the room feel very welcoming & special, and is perfect with your furnishings, trim & flooring. Beautiful room!

I read that you're keeping your red. LOL.

Maybe a new table runner? Or light linen roman shades for the window (you could keep them pulled up but it would add a softness)? Maybe that's the kind of change you're needing. :)
