I'm interested too! I'm seriously considering this for a chair like the one linked (only ours are Claret or Merlot - they are several years old, they could have been a different color name). What do you think?

I saw that too. For years I've used auto upholstery spray paint and it works the same leaving upholstery soft. A lot cheaper too. As I recall, it took 5 cans to paint a couch.

You might want to buy both and see how they compare. I'd try it, but the colors are limited, need a rust. It is interesting that this paint is shown being used on furniture and plastics also.

Bump... one way or the other I'm going to try this next week. Bueller, anybody?

What auto upholstery paint have you used Emagineer? When I googled it, the stuff that came up right off was by the same company and similar cost.

Yes, please Emagineer, did you use Dupli-Color? I read a good review for it vs. Simply Spray. And it appears to be slightly cheaper.

You guys remember MAGNAVERDE? He painted a sofa with regular waterborne paint. Looked great. Couple other people have done it too. I've threatened but never took the plunge.

Yes, I remember, funcolors, but the chairs I'm planning to do would be so much easier with a spray (there are a bunch of them)!

I went to AutoZone today... they have stopped carrying Duplicolor for fabrics, bummer, so I picked up the Rustoleum version. It was fairly cheap - $7, but after reading some negative reviews online, I'm tempted to take it back. Tomorrow I will call some other area auto parts stores to see if they carry it.

I have surfed their website and everyone seems to be pleased with their products, but unfortunately, the reviews are for vinyl instead of fabric.

So now I am reading about a brand called SEM available at NAPA, anyone ever heard of it?

From what I read SEM is for plastic and vinyl .

Thanks forboystoo. The thing is, they all carry the spray paint for auto exteriors by Dupli-Color, but some don't carry the fabric paint. I'll call.

I'm the original poster...I chickened out. I have ordered a slipcover instead of trying the paint. Good luck.

Apologies for not posting sooner. I ran a search for both paint and dye. Both have some cautious applications. Plus I got tired of seeing Simply Spray come up 75% of the time.

Could not find auto fabric spray once used. It was probably an issue like stippers are now. Too strong for the EPA to allow. And can't remember how long my project lasted from years ago.

Things mentioned about all fabric sprays:

Takes far more than expected as it seeps into the padding too.

Very difficult to cover evenly, even with a second coat.

All have a rough texture afterwards. They are primarily used for vynal and very low carpet.

The type of material is a big issue.

Thorough cleaning and drying prior is a definite. Stains will still be there.

I looked up carpet dye too, but this wears off in time, even if professionally done. An issue with other paints/dyes.

Cost for the appplication is huge, paint doesn't go very far.

One thing that I did find was a gal that used the acrylic fabric paint in bottles from the hobby store. She used the extender with it and a small roller to roll on the fabric. Looked good and I know this is soft after use.

So, I'm of no help with this. But perhaps try the idea above on the underside of your couch.
