Replacing All Door Knobs - ORB or Antique Brass? Help!

We are in the middle of having some long overdue painting and updates made to our home, built in 1965. The woodwork -medium golden brown - will be painted white. BM Simply White throughout most of the house, and a slightly creamier shade (Behr Divine Pleasure) in the kitchen. Walls in most rooms will be SW Softer Tan (75%).

In addition to painting, we are updating the kitchen and both bathrooms, replacing carpet, light fixtures, window treatments, etc. We also need to replace all the door knobs (brass), but I am having a hard time deciding whether to go with oil-rubbed bronze or antique brass. The style of the house and our decorating taste is very traditional, and we like warm colors and metals. I will use ORB cabinet hardware in the kitchen, mainly because I think it will look best with the new laminate countertops. But I am not sure whether to carry it through the rest of the house (excluding bathrooms which will have chrome and nickel fixtures.) I understand that antique brass finishes are making a comeback, and I actually like them. But there is a good chance that DH's job will require us to move in 2-3 years, so I wonder if potential buyers might prefer the oil-rubbed bronze. On the other hand, I wonder if ORB is a fading trend and also if the contrast between Simply White doors and ORB knobs would be too stark.

The contractors started over a month ago, and the painters were prepping all last week, so the house is a wreck. I am so tired from packing up the contents of every closet, cupboard, and drawer (so the interiors can be painted) that my ability to make even simple decisions is diminishing by the day. Choosing a doorknob finish shouldn't be hard, but I think I've 'hit the wall'. So if anyone has any advice, I'd love to hear it! Thanks.

I think it depends on what the specific manufacturer's finish for each looks like, but in general, either would be fine. What is your budget per set and what manufacturer are you looking at?

You could mix and match the two finishes, for example, brass for the front door and bedrooms and ORB for the bathrooms. It adds interest, I think.

As a general rule, antique brass is a slightly more formal finish than ORB.

I just got finished two weeks ago going through some of the same thing. We had all the trim, doors and windows repainted in BM Simply White. It looks so good! The Simply White is crisp but not stark and goes well with all my different room colors.

We also replaced all the doorknobs and hinges with round knobs as levers weren't in the budget. We narrowed it down to silver or ORB and chose the ORB as we didn't like the silver finish in our price point. Yes, the ORB stands out against the Simply White but in a positive way.

We have a mahogany front door and the hardware was already ORB, so now all the hardware on every door does match, but it's not a match to my kitchen faucets and knobs which are stainless steel or three of my bathrooms which have silver finishes. In my DR, I have an ORB chandelier, so I've definitely mixed it up. Even though I chose ORB for the door hardware, I don't think that means that every kitchen/bathroom knob and faucet has to be ORB. That would be so boring. Plus I'm not overly fond of ORB in the bathroom.

If it helps, the outside style of our home is traditional and our decorating style ranges from traditional to transitional.

There was a recent post in the last few days with many pictures featuring a builder's open house/home show in VA and one of the houses with very white trim had ORB door hardware. The other house had silver door hardware. I live in the Atlanta suburbs and here I'm seeing ORB in new builds, so I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon.

Like you I'm working on new blinds, window treatments and new carpet upstairs is next.

Good Luck! Your house is going to look fantastic!!

I would do antique brass because it is my favorite! I think the ORB is nice(we have it in a bathroom) but looks better with more masculine decor or in a craftsman or bungalow style home. The antique brass looks better in a traditional setting, IMO.

Brass is back! Just read this last weekend on my Houzz browse and had to share it with you!

Here is another idea....I"ve been doing a lot of online reading about ORB spray paint on metal hardware. It looks amazingly real. Some have done it on door knobs and say it wears fine! But I would do some reading...I think some may have first used a primer or metal etching primer, and then maybe even clear coated for door knobs. They say that items that don't get touched very much, such as light fixtures need very little prep. I think metallic spray paint also comes in aged brass but the consenus seems to be that ORB gives the best finish. I figure it can't hurt to try as you are switching it out anyway. If nothing else it would give you an idea of how the ORB looked. And, you won't have invested much at all if you do move.

I don't mind antique brass & ORB mixed because they blend so well...but I am a fan of consistent doorknobs/door hinges throughout because I personally think that that & trim is what unifies a home. Then you can mix in other finishes (within reason) in lt.finishes, cabinet hardware, etc. I've seen all kinds of mixtures lately, so perhaps I'm just dated in my viewpoints. I'm flexible, but stand my ground on this one. Take that for what it's worth.

Either would be nice, but I like the contrast between ORB knobs and ivory doors. It could be considered more masculine, but I think my distressed ORB egg shaped knobs w/square rose backplates are pretty!

Have you considered crystal knobs with a ORB back-plate?

I apologize for never posting to thank everyone for their suggestions. I finally decided to go with ORB throughout the house except for the two bathrooms (one is polished nickel, the other is satin nickel). The doorknobs (Schlage Andover in Aged Bronze) are all installed and look beautiful. The ORB knobs/pulls I ordered a month ago are still backordered, so I canceled that order and reordered a different style. Hopefully they will arrive this week. New light fixtures are all ORB. With the new paint, fixtures, and hardware, it looks like a new house :)

The classic styling of stained woodwork and brass fixtures that never left, is already back in style. ORB has faded big time.Natural brass is what's in. Most of your new construction custom homes are also doing stained grade woodwork, which is a LOT more expensive and upscale than painted.

    I'd leave well enough alone.

ORB hasn't faded around here; 99% of custom homes here have the ORB knobs (and many of the production homes as well if the buyers can afford the upgrade from standard silver). ORB is de rigeur in all the model homes in this area.

The home we are building will have ORB hinges and glass knobs with rectangular ORB rosettes on the same Santa Fe door juddgirl2 shows in her picture above - hopefully ours will be as beautiful as hers.

Like happyafwife, in our area, ORB hasn't faded. It is used more often than not in new construction in the most upscale neighborhoods. That is why we felt 'safe' using it.
I love the look of stained woodwork, too. But my old woodwork wasn't stained - it was a medium brown painted/glazed finish from the mid-1960's. After ~45 years and three owners, it looked terrible and needed to have something done. To strip and stain it all would have been cost prohibitive. So we opted to paint everything (cabinets, doors, baseboards, etc)a soft white. It makes the house look so much lighter and larger - I can't believe that too many potential buyers will be turned off by it.

gilmoregal, did you compare the Aged Bronze finish in Schlage to their Oil Rubbed Bronze? Which is a darker finish? Thanks.... also did you find a good buy on them anywhere in particular?

    arapaho -
I went with the Aged Bronze finish. I think I had read that their Oil Rubbed Bronze was very dark and flat, and that was not what I wanted. The Aged Bronze has a tiny bit of gold 'show through' on the edges and crevices, which I like. It just depends on the look you want.
I ended up ordering from Amazon; I think their prices were comparable to other websites, and we subscribe to Amazon Prime, so shipping was free.
