palladium windows

The house we just put an offer on has 2 large palladium windows, one in the eat-in kitchen, one in the master bedroom. Currently there are no dressings on the one in the Kitchen and the one in the MB has shades that start right below the arch, which A. looks weird and unfinished to me and B. allows the top arch to be uncovered which kinda creeps me out, I have a thing against open windows at night, even when the window is up high and there are trees around. I was thinking of mounting a curtain rod over the top of the arch, ignoring the shape of the window. Has anyone does this? Obviously you'd need really long curtains...maybe add panels to existing curtains?

Has anyone done this with a palladium window and if so would you mind sharing a picture? Or if you have a different suggestion, I'd love to hear it. I definitely want the option of opening the window up during the day for maximum light, so no frosted glass or permanent "sunburst" curtains over arches for sure!

Thanks!

Shawna

    Hi,

I had arch windows in my previous home. You're right about finding window coverings for arched / palladium windows like this!

In the living room where privacy wasn't a problem I just left them bare and had a window tint applied to protect from UV rays.

But in your master bedroom you need some privacy for sure! Personally, I think that linen pleated shades or cellular shades look best and they also help to insulate your windows from hot/cold weather.

Try the link below for some great tips on covering arched / palladium windows.

Thanks for the responses. Homedecoratorguy, I agree that the master bedroom for sure needs covering! And there are cellular shades on it now, but 2 small ones side by side that only go to below the arch....it looks weird. I'd at least get one solid one, but that still leaves the top...

Fnmroberts, I love love love that window treatment! Did you do it yourself, or have it made somewhere/order it somewhere? Does the shade covering the arch move as well? I'm not sure what you mean by adjustable louvers.

    Thanks!

Thanks, mitchdesj. I'm new to these windows and just googled the beginning of the name I could remember on-line....lots of instances of palladium but now I see lots of palladian. Anyway, you knew what we were talking about...not sure why that would make you lol...thanks for the link in any case!

Ok, so I just checked the link after responding to you mitchdesj. Now I am laughing with you! I don't know why so many people call them palladium windows! Google it for yourself. Weird.

Glad you like the treatment. It is all DIY. I sewed the panels using a gathered fabric - never again! One cannot sew a straight length because the bunched fabric stretches. Ended up allowing them to hang for several days and making the hem by hand where they hang. Like the look though. The valance is an upholstered wooden "box" which DH made. No, it doesn't have any adjustment.

The adjustable louvers are wedge shaped and "fan" out from the center as a sunburst. They can be pivoted to adjust their angle. Since you're searching, visit a blind shoppe and they will have one on display.

Here's a link which gives an illustration which is better than my description. Best of luck with the new home.

Wow! You did a wonderful job on that window!!!! I can't believe that is DIY, it looks so professional and expensive! I may have attempted something like that in the past, but now I have a 2 year old son and holy moley, I have no time! That link was useful, too. Thanks for the well wishes on the new house. Hopefully we'll hear good news soon!

You're so very kind. Actually alot of the credit goes to my DH too. This past winter, after 2 no-quotes from painters, he spent 5 weeks doing the redecorating in the Entry, Living and Dining rooms. If you double click on the photo, it will take you to before and after room photos as I shifted away from my monochromatic era. I still need to make panels for our Dining Room. Decided not to use the same fabric because of the difficulty working it so ordered the same color in a smooth finish. Want to get them hung by the holidays. I'll be able to line them too.

A 2-year old - at least he still takes naps. Long gone are those days for me. Grandchildren are 6 and 9. They're a joy and I can send them home spoiled. Mom's punishment to their Dad, that he have children like himself!

Nice to know that home sales are continuing in this market. I'm sure yours will work out.
